Astrology Sidereal Time.

clear.gif (807 bytes) You use the sidereal time in astrology to calculate the ascendant and the houses. Sidereal means to do with the stars, so sidereal time is "star time". Sidereal time runs faster than regular time, and a regular day is 23 hours 56 minutes in sidereal time.

You can discover the sidereal time at noon or midnight from an ephemeris. The noon ephemeris gives the sidereal time at noon, and the midnight ephemeris at midnight.

We are using the following example:

Mary was born  7 May 1982 at 11 hours 17 minutes AM, New Berlin, New York, USA

We need to find the sidereal time from the ephemeris. For noon on 7 May 1982 sidereal time was:

3 00 00

That is, sidereal (star) time was 3 AM.

In order to find the sidereal time for the time of birth (when it isn't in Greenwich and it isn't at noon) we need to perform some additional calculations.
