World Psychology

World Psychology

By Mark Sircus

This is a book about hopes and dreams. Its hope is one of race survival and planetary health and its dream is the realization of real change in human thinking and being. This is a book for people who can appreciate the unique situation we are facing in this century that will challenge us in ways we have never been challenged before. And it is a book for people who can see what is not working and what is coming from that. The very next fifty years of human history is absolutely crucial. Though we have been hammered for years about apocalypse and Armageddon from old time religions and new age cult groups, from basic science come dire warnings. In 1993 "World Scientists' Warning to Humanity," signed by some 1700 leading scientists, including over half of all living Nobel Laureates in science, stated, "A great change in our stewardship of the earth and the life on it is required if vast human misery is to be avoided and our global home on this planet is not to be irretrievably mutilated. A new ethic is required, a new attitude towards discharging our responsibility for caring for ourselves and for the earth. We must recognize the earth's limited capacity to provide for us. We must recognize its fragility."

Thus this book brings total awareness to these warnings from respected scientists and others. And it confronts the denial of the dangers that threaten our very existence on this planet as well as resistance to changing what needs to be changed. This book is about social enlightenment, not just individual evolution and growth. It is not enough, in terms of racial harmony, for a few or even millions to get enlightened, (or live in comfortable modern castles) living happily ever after leaving billions behind them in the lurch.

The eminent historian John Lukacs recently published
an essay titled, ‘It's the End of the Modern Age.’
The gist is that "Western" civilization that way of organizing
society around individualism, market capitalism, democracy
and the Scientific Method is now in irremediable decline.

World Psychology concentrates on global issues and the entire fabric of human oneness through identification with the entirety of our race consciousness. It deals with the whole of human experience from politics to economics, religion, ecology, sexuality and terrorism. In approaching something as broad as World Psychology needs to be, we have to go down to the very basics of life and take a good look and question the very sanity of human consciousness as it is manifesting today. Is humanity mad? “An observer from another planet would probably conclude that the human race has agreed to some sort of collective suicide pact, perhaps decided that life isn’t worth living after all and resolved to make themselves extinct within the next hundred years,” writes author Steven Taylor. People are worried about many things and it does seem that the world is going crazier every year. “I think life as usual is subdued all over the globe and all of us feel more tenuous about life and are holding our breaths,” writes Virginia Brickbarn capturing the essence of this moment in human history. World Psychology will redefine the meaning of insanity to incorporate all that is happening on earth today; and by doing so will find many people who think they are fine and doing well contributing to the demise of the quality of life on this earth.

Any World Psychology would have to go down to the core of human attitudes and confront all that leads to separation, selfishness, violence, arrogance, and the hurting of other beings. It would have to get behind the issues to the source of human darkness. Einstein said, “If we want to save this world from unimaginable destruction we need to concentrate on the heart of the individual,” but before we can touch on the heart level of being we have to look at the reality of the beliefs people carry around in their heads, especially those types whose nature is to create separation between beings. The best definition of the ego is our separate self. It is the sense of ourselves separate and apart from all others and from the environment in which we live. Inside our ego is still our self and the truth that this individual self can live and thrive without its sense of separation is one of the main principles World Psychology will seek to teach.

If we look deep enough there is a cancer that has been growing and spreading in the human mind for thousands of years. Certain beliefs (that create separation) have taken deep root in human consciousness and are behind most of what we see today in the modern world. There are certain concepts and beliefs that are poisonous to the heart, to the best aspect of human nature and it will be a basic aspect of World Psychology to dig out and expose these rotten roots for what they really are. J. Krishnamurti touches on the enormity of this issue when he said:

“When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of Mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or partial system; he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind.”

This first volume of the World Psychology series will concentrate on the terrorism of how our minds and egos separate themselves from others and the environment but in later volumes we will chase this down to the most personal and intimate levels and see how the separations we make from each other create havoc in our marriages and families. Nothing short of deep penetration of the ego will make any difference in the world and in our personal intimate lives at home. Einstein, in his inestimable spiritual wisdom said, “I believe that task of the spirit is to free man from his ego.” The root of all evil lies in mans own ego, in how he separates himself, in how he cuts him or herself off from the basic vibration of the heart. In referring back to the opening comments about capitalism, it is really not capitalism that is the root of evil but man himself who uses capitalism in selfish, hurtful and imperialistic ways. We would be wasting our time trying to change our human systems if we did not bother to change anything about ourselves. World Psychology sets out to do both simultaneously with the understanding that there is no real separation between our internal worlds of experience and our outer external social and material existences as human beings.

World Psychology introduces a host of new principles and combines them together into a synthesis of thought. It seems like we do need to find Einstein’s grand unification theory that will include all the branches of human endeavor from economics to environmentalism and psychology. This first volume will talk a lot about problems and the crisis our world is moving steadily into and the series as a whole introduces creative solutions and a whole battery of approaches, insights and psychologies which integrate human thought, feeling and wisdom into a unified system, which when embraced, will catapult individuals, small groups, and eventually nations, governments and the race consciousness to a level which will help move us on a navigational path toward a sustainable future.

It should be obvious that it is the human mind that is at the center of the problem. It has been miss-programmed, its wires crossed or short-circuited. Something is wrong in some of its basic lines of code so the whole program, the whole show is coming crashing down. Unfortunately it is impossible to sweep the collective mind of humanity clean and begin all over with the programming. We have to start with humanity and ourselves as we are, accept that, understand and forgive ourselves for what we are and what we are doing. But we have to change; our society and institutions need to change, as well as our religions, political and governmental establishments. The heart of World Psychology, using current and near future world events as mirrors on the quality of human consciousness, is based on the reality that we are all going to be forced by life, by nature, to look at truth eventually, or be increasing divided if we resist. In Mark 3:25 it was said that "A House divided against itself, 'against truth,' cannot stand." The world is divided along so many lines today that the house of cards is threatening to fall in on the collective. There is no doubt that we are going to be forced to confront the errors of our behavior in incredibly dramatic ways. These errors are running in such deep channels that they cannot be easily comprehended yet the consequences of them are being seen in increasing frequent and catastrophic ways. Neither the world as a social system nor the world as an ecosphere can withstand much more.

Though it is not pleasant to look at what is happening in the world, our resistance to looking deeply at events and their primordial causes increases the force and the need for nature to crash down on us. World Psychology suggests that it is better when we look willingly at ourselves and at life than wait until we are forced for that is not pleasant at all. If we place all our ideas of hope and faith and optimism aside for a minute, it certainly does look like we need to be forced and will be forced in ways brutal to billions to learn our lessons the hard way. The resistance to change is so great in the masses, and the powers that be so stubborn and entrenched in their high halls and bastions of power, nothing short of a miracle, a major one, will spare the lash, meaning the natural consequences of our ignorant behaviors.

If we don’t deal with reality,
reality will deal with us.

We need to deliberately make a decision to look, change and begin the work suggested in this book, which will take a long hard journey through some of the most difficult realities of modern day life. It would be nice to indulge in all sorts of psychological and spiritual pleasantries hoping that high ideals would carry us through to a new dawn of peace and harmony on earth. The new age had its chance on this level and did not come up with visions nor concepts that had the power to penetrate the dense egocentric nature of mankind. Now the whip is behind us and world events are gathering up into a tidal storm that will either motivate us to change or sweep us away.

World Psychology means to thread the needle through all the issues that are confronting humanity, searching for their common causes within the spiritual psychological makeup of humanity. In this work I define listening as the ecology of being and include ecology itself as an important aspect of psychology. It seems likely that the responsibilities will be greater for all of us who have hopes of a future that our children will be comfortable living in. World Psychology also defines the heart as the vulnerability of being. Together with listening as the ecology of being we have the foundational bedrock on which to build an evolved unified paradigm of psychology, science and spirituality that will be helpful and useful for mankind. The principle solutions found in this book are Listening and Communication Psychology and what I call the Psychology of the Heart, which is expanded on in HeartHealth, volume two of World Psychology. Einstein indicated many years ago, “We must change the heart of man.” The place where heart, ego, mind, matter, vulnerability and listening all meet up is the playing field of World Psychology, which will penetrate behind all the veils and barriers to clear human understanding of human nature and the forces driving current events.

Another principle solution that will be offered inside this text will be revolutionary new concepts presented by the Einstein Galileo School. Nothing is more important then the education of the next generation for the future is in their hands. A great part of what World Psychology is about is education and shaping what education needs to become to insure the evolution of society in healthy and productive ways. The psychology of education cannot be separated from a viable World Psychology for it is the principle vehicle on which we shape humanities future. This book introduces an entirely new paradigm in education and offers a clear vision for intelligent education in the digital age. It is with the young that we can break the links with our ignorance.

It may well be that the nation cannot survive
as a decent place to live, as a world-class power
or even as a democracy.

Douglas Nelson
Director Annie E. Casey Foundation,
after studying the trajectory of childhood development in the US

Having included education in a broad psychological paradigm called World Psychology, we also have to include economics. Economists never seem to find any real solutions to the world’s economic dilemma because they divorce and separate economics from the psychological and spiritual dimensions of our lives. More than a few people believe that capitalism in its present selfish form will collapse eventually from its own internal contradictions (and many trillions of dollars of debt) and that present tensions, now manifesting more forcefully in world wide terrorist acts, amounts to a class struggle for domination, religious in nature, which represents the beginning of a world wide civil war. There are new ideas and visions around, ways of organizing human activities that potentially can serve humanities real needs in much more productive and less destructive ways then imperial capitalism, which does not take in the destruction of the environment onto its balance sheets.

No system is invincible.

Stephen S. Roach
Director of global economics for Morgan Stanley
talking about The American System

It is time for psychology to expand itself onto the world stage and take responsibility for the integration of all that needs to be integrated in human life. What is happening in the universe of the heart, in our beings, in our feeling and emotional worlds, both individually and collectively is crucial at this moment of gathering darkness. Today the lessons for our souls are being experienced more and more collectively as cities and entire nations confront together great traumas of being. New York, the United States and the entire globe after September 11th felt the world change. Australia, after fifty years of peace and quiet has had its collective soul opened after Bali. Washington with the two snipers was paralyzed with fear for three weeks, and Moscow and Russia filled with tragedy. In Russia the issue perhaps is most clear, a country desperately seeking its freedom and the Russian people and government as desperate in not wanting or willing to give it to them. These places in the world are just beginning to feel what many others have felt around the globe for a long time. The main centers of civilization are now under attack and obviously this is going to generate a great deal of emotions and feelings.

World Psychology will address itself to most of the central issues and problems that are being caused by man himself. Besides presenting the main principles and paradigms of World Psychology, volume one will concentrate on the world’s problem with terrorism and violence. Terrorism and the abuse of human consciousness is a much broader subject than most of us want to believe. World Psychology examines all forms of terrorism, industrial, environmental, educational, economic, legislative, military, religious, the terrorism of the war on drugs, the terrorism of money, debt, and globalization, medical terrorism, and the terrorisms of large organizations, which desperately try to hide their terrorist activities from the public eye. In this book we will globalize the issue and include the sexual terrorism of women and children for World Psychology hopes to address the root causes and consequences of terrorism, even that kind found in the home, the place which should be safe, our nest and heaven in a confused and disturbed world. We can even define pollution as another way we humans terrorize ourselves by terrorizing our environment. Taken in simultaneously it all comes together in a way that suggest solutions to what might amount to a tragic collapse of civilization and freedom as we know it.
