Introduction

Understanding Ourselves, Our Minds, & Personalities

You are a Rainbow! Yes you are and you do not even know it! We are all rainbows. The true secrets of Color Psychology can open up a fascinating world of mystery, fun, and deep understanding. Color Psychology can also help us understand those around us who seem so different.

Before I began the long arduous work of surrendering my mind to my heart I spent literally thousands of hours studying the structure of the mind. The science of epistemology and color psychology unlocked the underlying structures and levels that the mind operates on and through this study I learned crucial knowledge that helped me eventually scale the heights of my heart. In reality the pure heart encompasses the whole, which means that each and every level of mental activity is included within its embrace. In talking to people about the heart, which is centered in the universe of feelings, I find that they perceive that a choice has to be made between the rational and conceptual mind and the heart. In HeartHealth (my second book) we talked much about this duality between heart and head. And it was made clear that the crucial point is what we put first. In Christianity we have this idea stated clearly with Seek first the kingdom of Heaven. The mind, without the heart or soul being aware of how that mind is being used, is a lost cause. When we talk about the pure heart we are talking about the seat of awareness, the nuclear center of our consciousness that is aware enough to perceive and use all the levels of mind appropriately. The mind is a great instrument; a fantastic tool which when used right helps us create a heaven on earth. Though we might have to loose our minds before we can find them again, the mind can never be permanently lost. In the bible it was said that one must lose one’s life to gain it. For most people the loss of mind is perceived as a loss of life so identified with it they are.

Before we can even conceive of entering the pure heart we must practice letting go of certain levels of the mind by entering other levels of mental activity that we might not be very familiar with. To let go of our cherished levels of mental activity for another in and of itself can feel like death to many spiritual people who cling quite tenaciously to their concepts. And in intimate relationships we also have to deal with our loved ones different levels of perception. Not everyone obviously operates from the same levels of awareness and a deep understanding of the differences helps us begin to approach the light of shared understanding.

Color Psychology offers us the clearest key to understanding the mind and how it functions and thus how it can be used. And yet because the antecedents of this psychology are steeped in ancient knowledge, modern psychologists have denied its importance. Dr. Max Luscher brought color Psychology into the modern world over fifty years ago and his work was brought to fruition by Dr. Christopher Hills in his work Nuclear Evolution. Actually the rainbow is at the heart of everything and is a universal constant across the entire electromagnetic spectrum and thus across all levels of life. We are rainbows and our minds operate and resonate differently with each spectral color. In fact each color shapes the function of each level of mental activity. To understand our minds and personalities down to their very roots we must study the foundation stones of the mind and how consciousness forms differently on each level of mental perception.

In reality our relationships with other people are dependent on the knowledge we have of ourselves. Without knowing what is going on inside of different parts of ourselves how can we ever know what is going on inside of the consciousness of others? Knowledge of self and of others is the same and the map of consciousness offered by color psychology is as universal in human terms as the rainbow is in cosmic terms.

Epistemology is the study of how we know and perceive things. If we do not know how we know what we know we are in a position of relative ignorance or walking in some virtual state of blindness; for nothing is perceived without our perceptual apparatus, without our rainbow body. Perceptual psychology is crucial to us simply because this is the knowledge that illustrates how we perceive, or more importantly, misperceive ourselves, others, and the universe at large. Everything that we know and think and experience is a result of some perception that we make with our consciousness.

Our Rainbow Body is in reality, the perceptual clothing our souls or beings wear while inhabiting this planet called earth.

Red Level of Awareness
Physical - reactive, aggressive manipulative or practical and gets things done.

Orange Level of Awareness
Social and political dependence on one's culture, or love of our fellow beings.

Yellow Level of Awareness
Intellectual and mechanical and separate thinking or the penetrating light of insight.

Green Level of Awareness
Security and the obtaining of sufficient vital force, or possessive love.

Blue Level of Awareness
Mental and conceptual idealizm, or devotion to higher authority.

Indigo Level of Awareness
Psychic and abstract intuitive faculty, or cloud nine mentality.

Violet Level of Awareness
Imaginative perception of the cosmic order or the seeking of hidden powers and the manipulation of the imaginations of others.

Color Psychology is about how are our personalities are structured and formed around our conscious or unconscious absorption of light. Our vehicles of light or "light body" are absorbing the cosmic light through the prism of the chakra system. We absorb, mix, and eventually re-radiate out this light. This process that is going on deep within us and makes us very much who and what we are.

It is not our intent in this book to get into the physics of light or into anything about the chakra system that correlates very much with the acupuncture meridians. For all of that I suggest you read Christopher Hills' books Nuclear Evolution and The Rise of the Phoenix. They are both a thousand pages long so much to dig into. But in essence these chakras are distinct bio-electrical vortexes of energy that act like radio receiving sets tuned to different bandwidths of light and consciousness.

What is crucial is what is happening inside of each chakra or perceptual color level. What we do with our consciousness or levels of awareness matters much for we are given the freedom to twist the pure consciousness of each level into any number of different ego or personality trips. A major aspect of color psychology is the study of these personality dysfunctions.

In ancient times the Rainbow Bridge was a symbol for the territory we eventually had to cross in our spiritual evolution.

The chakra system is the lung of our light body. The seven biological chakras that our situated along the spine act like prisms to breakdown the cosmic light into the spectrum colors. Usually each personality is breathing fully on only one or two chakra levels so you might find one person predominately intellectual, the next, an artist working on the violet or imaginative level and so on. There are literally billions of combinations and the most conscious person has opened all the chakras or levels of perception and plays on them (the mind) like a conductor would on his orchestra. Astrology is also a map of consciousness and it indicates mostly the ‘resting’ colors or those levels that we feel most comfortable with. Each person incarnates with tendencies toward certain colors and social conditioning has great effect also. For instance it is well known that children are very imaginative and do pick that color most often first in the Luscher Color Test. But schools and society discriminate against creativity and this level does end up getting repressed in most people, the same with the intuition and with the heart center of feelings. And for thousands of years religion and our spiritualities have been discriminating against the passion of the red, against sexuality. Yet the predominant color of human consciousness is still very much red for we are still identified mostly with our bodies and as such physical consciousness.

What is difficult to see is that our experience in life is determined largely by the color levels that our functioning; which chakra is most open, and which is most closed. For many people entire segments of life are missing because the person is not breathing in sufficient light on one or more levels of consciousness. Or they are taking in the light energy and twisting it in unhealthy ways. The absolute science of spirituality is seen in the study of these distortions and twists, in how pure consciousness gets used and abused.

Dr. Christopher Hills
Dr. Christopher Hills

Major aspects of this work are taken directly out of Christopher Hills’ Nuclear Evolution and Rise of the Phoenix. Some of this material has been rewritten and certainly reorganized by me but it should be clear where the vast majority of the credit belongs. Most of Christopher’s work has been buried, covered up by the sand and perhaps by certain people’s egos. He passed away in the early nineties and little is available to be seen anywhere on the net about his work. And few people have the will to plow through two thousand pages of very intense materials. I personally devoted my HeartHealth book to him because without him I would have never known that my heart was anything more than a pump. Dr. Christopher Hills was a true genius in this area and entered territory, that to my best knowledge, no one has totally entered before. His theories and practices are called Nuclear Evolution; and this book offers a simplification of his work on Color Psychology. So there is no claim to originality. I consider myself to be a color psychologist and have invested more time in studying this subject than perhaps any other. It offers a basic language to psychologists and others who are interested in human relationships and human potentials.

Also you will see some material from Dr. Max Luscher’s Color Test. These are basically in-depth summaries of the color levels. The green level contains some materials from HeartHealth and on the orange level you will see a chapter on Group Consciousness from The Marriage of Souls, my first work on the nature of pure love relationships. Though many people have written about the chakras, and even the bible mentions ‘the mystery of the seven stars,’ Hills gets the ultimate prize for depth, accuracy, and completeness. And with the addition of his own direct perception into the hidden secrets of consciousness, he takes us places that men have not been before.

Knowing ones own rainbow body is instrumental in deepening ones own self-knowledge as it reveals our major areas of perceptual blindness. We need to know the meaning and the context of all our thoughts and feelings and this natural map is universal, applicable to each and every human being. How you know what you know is crucial information, basic, fundamental and absolute in its laws and properties.
