Detecting the Human Energy Field

by Keith Wakelam

Using the GSR meter to detect energy fields

Over the past twenty years Valerie Hunt, a Physical Therapist and Professor of Kinesiology at U.C.L.A. California, has developed a method of detecting certain peaks of high frequency electrical impulses within the human body, which she believes relate to a non-physical energy field surrounding the body. It corresponds to ancient teachings regarding the human aura and the system of vortices known as the Chakras.

Medical science has shown that all living creatures maintain electro-chemical processes in their bodies - human beings more so, because of the electrical activity of their brains. Complicated signal pulses are constantly being passed along nerve fibres throughout the body. Valerie's work involved the study of human muscle movement by means of Electromyographs. This instrument picks up the electro-chemical pulses sent along the nerves to activate the muscles. The strength of the muscle reaction depends solely upon the frequency of such pulses. The highest pulse frequency in the motor nerves is around 250 Hz.

Sharp pulses like these, which can be heard as clicks in a loudspeaker amplifier, have higher frequency components, which follow a distinct pattern of attenuation in accordance with what is known as "Fourier Analysis". Valerie was therefore able to filter out these muscle signals and their higher frequency components. After doing this she was left with smaller signals in the range from 100 to 1600 Hz, which did not seem to emanate from the heart, nerves or brain. By producing a Frequency Spectrum of these signals Valerie showed that they formed distinct peaks at regular intervals, quite unlike what might have been expected from random noise.

This discovery lead Valerie to believe that the high-frequency electrical signals were the effect of another, non-physical energy system acting upon the human body. Something intangible, like the human aura and the legendary system of Chakras. She was lead to this conclusion after studying many EMG's, including those of a ballet dancer, who claimed that she was using this outer energy field to help her complete complicated choreographs.

Valerie then expanded her research to include people who claimed to be able to see the colors of the human aura, an energy field surrounding the body, although this caused some raised eyebrows among her colleagues. The vital aim of her research was to establish whether something immaterial, outside the body, could influence electro-chemical activity in the body. This might be the vital link between body and spirit which had occupied the minds of all philosophers since the time of Plato.

The human body is composed of 90% water and so these higher frequencies would be damped out if they originated in the body. In order to affect the body's electro-chemical system they would have to pass along a separate non-physical system of special meridians throughout the body as suggested by Acupuncturists. The other theory is that they do not penetrate the body at all, but instead circulate around the skin, where the dead skin cells offer a higher resistance to the passage of current into the body.

Pursuing her line of research, Valerie was able to associate particular peaks of the subtler frequencies both with a tone scale and with particular colors of the human aura as seen by sensitives.

By collecting sample fields from many individuals, Valerie was able to relate certain talents or abilities to specific frequency peaks in their energy field spectra. For instance, materialistically minded people had no significant peaks above the limit of 250 Hz. People with healing ability seemed to have frequency peaks between 400 and 800Hz. Persons with extra-sensory perception of some kind or other seemed to operate in a narrow band from 800 to 900 Hz. Those with energy peaks above 900Hz. are what she called "mystical personalities", able to act on information derived from "hunches".

My own research into the allied field of galvanic skin response had demonstrated that, in attempting to increase the amplification of GSR Meters beyond a certain point, one became aware of "noise artefacts". Noise is created in all high amplification circuits, so I merely took steps to eliminate it by suitable filtering. That means cutting off all frequencies above 30 Hz.

However, it seems that I was mistaken in necessarily calling this "noise", particularly since the advent of very low-noise integrated circuits. New technology has enabled the output from skin resistance meters to be fed into computers by an analogue to digital converter, which gives a faithful representation of the resistance variations, just like an oscilloscope. In addition, the programs now available enable one to derive an Averaged Frequency Spectrum from these skin resistance readings, over a period of a few seconds. A few years ago instruments capable of doing this were exceedingly complex and cost thousands of pounds.

When I first looked at the normal oscilloscope display of the resistance variations of the human body I was presented with something that resembled high frequency noise, as I had expected. But when one changed the presentation to that of an Averaged Frequency Spectrum certain sharp peaks appeared at particular points which did not resemble noise. Moreover, these peaks seemed to correspond with what Valerie Hunt had described in her book. This correspondence was curious, to say the least.

After conducting many scans with different people I, too, found there was a variation in the energy peaks related to physical, mental and spiritual qualities. It does turn out however, that the energy field readings are very responsive to movement and environment. When one moves, the muscle potentials, being much larger, cause the readings to fluctuate erratically. Similarly, a strip light switched on nearby will cancel all the energy peaks and produce a very large peak at 2,400Hz.

It is interesting to note that, after a few minutes, the body is able to adapt itself to such large inputs and the interference peak diminishes. If the body did not have this capacity for adapting to the large electromagnetic fields we are continually exposed to, then we would all be in bad shape.

One has to be very calm and composed to get worthwhile results. Likewise one needs to carefully screen the input leads to avoid pick-up of mains frequency, or other electrical interference. Also, people standing near you will affect your field. If you are tired or ill, it will show. One further measure to validate the results, is to use a Bilateral Meter, which has double electrodes in each hand. Random interference inputs in each hand, which affect the whole body, will then be added in opposite polarity in the Meter and cancelled. What remains is a signal going across the body and causing a difference between the two hands. This can be demonstrated by just holding an electrode in one hand, when the energy field readings will disappear.

Much more research needs to be done in order to produce any precise relationships with personality types and physical ailments, such as Valerie Hunt has done. I am sure, however, that this method will prove a valuable diagnostic tool. In addition to static readings one can judge the effect on the energy field of engaging in certain practices, taking drugs or alcohol, and therapeutic methods, such as "spiritual healing", or the subject's response to music. Seeing the body's tone scale and how it falls within the musical scale, one can now appreciate the value and uplift that music provides.

More interesting information about measuring the aura of humans, animals and plants is available at the Institute of Technical Energy Medicine. The mission of the Institute is to conduct innovative research in the fields of health, psychology and bioenergy physics, and to explore the mechanics of consciousness and how the human mind affects conditions of the body.
