The Dale-Chall Formula, modified for any number of words in the text, is:
The formula is applied after eliminating the words that are in a list,
called the Dale-Chall list. The words to be eliminated include the
words in the list, derived words, first names and numbers. The list used by Readability is the old list.
The
program does not identify first or given names, because in a
multi-language society, the number of names is somewhat large, and
perhaps not easily accessible, and the principle of omitting first
names is not clear. For instance, some Hawaiin names are extremely long! In some
texts, the number calculated will not, therefore, be in conformity with
the Dale Chall formula.
