Rulers, Exalted, Detriment

Signs are ruled by planets, and planets enter and leave the signs. These can be thought of as guests in the sign. A planet which is a ruler in a sign is in its detriment in the opposite sign, so Mars, which rules Aries, is in its detriment in Libra. Certain planets are honoured guests. For instance, the sun is exalted in Aries, and in its fall in the opposite sign Libra.

An exalted planet works very well in the sign, perhaps even better than the sign's rules. A planet in its fall is incompatible with that sign. It is an unwelcome guest, or one that is tolerated.

Decanates

The signs can be divided into three (ten degrees each), which are called decanates. The first is from the beginning to 9 degrees. The second from 10 degrees to 19, and the third from 20 to 29. (Note the signs go from zero to 29, which is 30 degrees in total, and 30 degrees is the beginning of the next sign). A planet in a sign is in one or the other decanates.

The decanates, in one system, are governed by the signs in the same element. For instance, the first decan of Aries is governed by Aries; the second by Leo; and the third by Sagittarius. The first decan of Taurus is governed by Taurus; the second by Virgo; the third by Capricorn. This pattern follows throughout. The rulership of each decan is the planet which rules the sign governing that decan. So, for Gemini, the rulership of the second decan is the ruler of Libra, or Venus. The first decan of Scorpio is governed by Scorpio; the second by Pisces; and the third by Cancer. The rules of these decans are: Mars or Pluto for the first; Neptune for the second; and the Moon for the third.
