The first subject is smoking. We know that smoking is unhealthy, expensive and that basically, it's a very negative thing to be doing when really we are wanting to move our lives forward. It's a ball and chain holding us back. But we do it anyway because we are addicted: if we don't smoke we feel frustrated, unfocused, and missing something that we feel we need. Key to stopping smoking is being able to change these uncomfortable feelings, which are in our body-mind. Here's one really effective way to go about doing so...
By Terry Martin of About.com
Without a doubt, your own will and determination to stop smoking are the best quit aids available to you. They are also mandatory requirements for successful, long term smoking cessation. With solid commitment in place, any quit aid of your choice will help. Without it, nothing will. So, with that said, let's take a look at hypnosis as a tool to help you stop smoking.
Hypnosis activates an altered state of consciousness in which a person is fully awake while being deeply relaxed and more susceptible to suggestion. Exactly how hypnosis works isnt known, but one thing is certain: people in a hypnotic trance can't be convinced to do things they wouldnt normally do. They are in full control of their free will.
You might be surprised to learn that you probably experience a self-induced hypnotic trance at least once a day. Have you ever been driving your car only to suddenly realize you can't remember some of the trip? Do you sometimes "lose yourself" while reading a good book or watching a movie? Three-dimensional life fades away, and you're immersed in a different reality, often vividly complete with emotions and physical sensations. That sense of disconnection from your present surroundings while awake and alert signals a hypnotic trance. Rather than being sleep-like, while under hypnosis, people are actually in a state of increased attentiveness, and suggestions offered can take root more easily.
As a smoking cessation aid, hypnosis has one very important benefit that other quit smoking tools aren't able to offer. Because it uses the power of positive suggestion to help you stop smoking, it actually has the ability to help you develop and strengthen your will and determination to succeed. In my mind, that's a significant benefit!
Most smokers start their quit programs on shaky legs. Nicotine addiction makes us think we are weak and unable to live without our cigarettes. Given time and a healthy attitude though, we can tip the scales in our favor. With every smoke free day completed, you are proving to yourself that quitting is possible. Add some hypnosis to your smoking cessation plan, and it will help you develop the attitude you need to succeed. Further, if you use hypnosis in conjunction with another quit aid, such as the nicotine patch or bupropion (Zyban), your chance of long term success is even higher.
The Non-Smoker's Edge - Quit Smoking Forever
This 7-CD hypnosis program was developed by Randy Gilchrist, who is a licensed psychotherapist with advanced training in clinical hypnosis. Dr. Gilchrist works in private practice helping people recover from addictions to alcohol, drugs, food and smoking, among other things. The program offers users 4 primary sessions of hypnosis to quit smoking:
- Motivation and Confidence
Learn how to build a strong desire to stop smoking. Reasons to quit and benefits of quitting are covered.
- Overcoming Past Connections
In order to quit successfully, we must change what cigarettes mean to us and the connections they have in our lives.
- Creating New, Healthier Connections
Time to reprogram our minds with healthier choices. Great guided visualization of cleansing our bodies of the toxins smoking leaves behind.
- Preventing Relapse
This session cements the value of quitting and provides help with avoiding a smoking relapse.
Each hypnosis session is 25 to 30 minutes in length. I found myself coming away from each of them encouraged and motivated to make changes in my life.
Along with the basic 4-session set described above, there are 5 additional 20-30 minute hypnosis sessions targeted at these specific issues:
- Handling feelings without cigarettes
- Weight management
- Assertiveness / people skills
- Energy and concentration
- Pairing smoking with unpleasant experiences also known as aversion therapy.
In addition, Dr. Gilchrist shares information about various quit aids on the market today, along with a lengthy discussion reviewing 20 separate behavior modification strategies.
This hypnosis program is a solid tool to help you quit smoking. The user is given a wealth of information and support, along with several hours of quality hypnosis sessions that can be replayed frequently. The recording quality is excellent, and Dr. Gilchrists voice is soft with a soothing cadence. He is extremely effective at helping the listener relax and focus.
The cost of this program is fully refundable for a year, so if you're not happy with it for any reason, return it and you've lost nothing. Use hypnosis in conjunction with another quit aid and some solid support, and you'll greatly improve your chances of making this the quit that lasts you a lifetime.
About.com awarded The Non-Smoker's Edge a full 5 stars. Getting past your smoking addiction will be much easier with the help of this mental tool.

"Since your hypnosis, I am not only staying away from smoking, but I also stopped eating the junk food I used to eat. There were no fireworks. I am simply a new person--how I've wanted to be for a long time. This is wonderful!"

Much of my coaching is spent helping people in transition make decisions regarding the next phase of their lives. Some of them are looking for their next professional path. Some are trying to figure out relationship issues, and others are wondering if they really could achieve a long-held dream. The decisions that my clients make around these issues are obviously important ones, yet making decisions in the middle of a life transition can sometimes be a little complicated.
Setting Sail
I compare going through a life transition to setting sail on a foggy sea. As you begin your transition, you can still see the shoreline. At this point, you may not even realize you are in a transition. You are very excited about the possibilities of changing a part of your life; and you can hardly wait to set sail and explore the distant shores. Yet, as you sail further out to sea, or further into your transition, you lose sight of the familiar shoreline. The fog begins to settle in around you. You can't make out where you are going, and you can no longer see where you came from.
This feeling of drifting at sea with no port in sight can be very unnerving for many of us. We live in a culture that wants fast and definitive answers to our questions. We want quick solutions to our problems. And we want fast and easy ways out of the fog of transition.
The Discomfort of Uncertainty
So, when we find ourselves in the middle of this kind of uncertainty, it can be very easy to give in to the discomfort of not knowing exactly where we are going or what we need to do next. We hear critical voices telling us that we have made a mistake, or that we don't really have what it takes to find our way through the fog.
We begin to feel anxious and notice that our resolve to making the change is slowly slipping away. It is at this point when it can be easy to decide to quit the journey and return to the comfort of our old and familiar shoreline. But if we let the voices of fear and doubt override the voices coming from our heart, we are apt to make decisions about our future that may not serve us well in the long run.
One of my clients, Anne, had always had an interest in graphic design. She recently had left her corporate job to pursue her life-long dream of starting her own graphics business. In the beginning she was very motivated. She talked to people, gathered information, and started planning what she needed to do. Yet, as time went by and she found herself running into little snags, she began to question her initial decision.
She had made the choice to leave a comfortable, if somewhat stifling, world behind her, to set sail for a distant shore that she could only see in her heart; and for her that was very frightening. Anne found being betwixt and between extremely uncomfortable and very anxiety producing. She began to question her ability to succeed, her commitment to her dream, and her overall desire to start a graphics business.
Although she was being encouraged to stay the course by me, as well as by many friends, she also was being pressured by other friends and family members to return to the security of the corporate world. In the end she made the decision to go back to her old job.
The Timing of Decisions
Whether this decision was the right one or not isn't really important. What is important is the timing of Anne's decision. She chose to go back to her old job when she was feeling the most scared and vulnerable. And ironically, it is at this very point, when we are at our lowest, that we need to put our full trust in the transition process.
We need to believe that if we keep ourselves open to the experience, and if we continue to move slowly towards our goal, we will eventually sail out of the fog and find ourselves in a new and wonderful place. But this is a hard leap of faith for some people to make. Anne's decision was not really about her life plan. It was about relieving the discomfort she felt at that time. She was trading in her long-held dream for instant relief from a transitory uneasiness.
Staying one's course in the midst of confusion and doubt can be extremely difficult, but there are things that one can do to successfully navigate any transition.
Tips for Successful Transitions
First, before you set sail make sure that you have a strong support network in place. This network can consist of friends, colleagues, a spouse, a mentor, or a coach. Just make sure that they understand what you want and that they are willing and able to truly support you in your journey.
Second, familiarize yourself with the process of transition. The more you know what to expect, the better able you will be to withstand the times of uncertainty. Two of my favorite books on transition are: "The Way of Transition" by William Bridges and "Silver Linings" by Melissa Gayle West.
Third, remember that slow and steady wins the race. Listen to the voice in your heart, not the gremlins in your head. Use your support system when you start to waver.
And finally, always keep your dream in front of you as a constant beacon guiding you through the fog.

If the 90's British pop sensation 'the Spice Girls' ever get remembered for anything, I hope it's for bringing the question 'now tell me what you want, what you really, really want?' to the mass consciousness. Now you may laugh at this, but when you really, really think about it, is there a more important question you could ask yourself?
What is a want? A want is a desire. Whether or not we get what we want is often based upon the strength of our desires. I know many will probably argue with this statement, but in some strange way, there is a part of me that truly believes that we all get what we want. If you really had a burning desire to change your reality, you would do it, right? Well, I'd like to think so. Now if you're convinced that it's time you actually started wanting more, then allow me to share three simple but powerful secrets.
1. Know what you want.
If ever there was a personal development concept that was worth grasping it's this one: know what you want. If you don't know what you want, do you really believe that you have any chance whatsoever of getting it?
The sad reality of life is the fact that the majority of people in this world don't know what they want. Even sadder is the fact that this is the way most people prefer it.
If you aren't actively pursuing your own wants and desires, chances are that you will become a statistic of un-fulfillment. Always remember that your employer, government, financial institutions, family and peer groups will all be trying to shape your life according to their wants, not yours.
2. Ask for what you want.
Once you are clear about what it is you want, you've got to ask for it! Can you imagine sitting in a restaurant, reading the menu, making your selection, but not telling the waiter? What are your chances of getting a meal? Pretty slim! If you are clear about what you want, you need to start telling other people about your aspirations. When you do this, you will find that others will conspire to help make your dream a reality.
I've personally had countless experiences of people going out of their way to help me once I had let them know what I wanted.
3. Expect to receive what you want.
It is also very important that you start to develop the mindset where you just expect to get everything you ask for. When you set your brain a task or embed an expectation, it will naturally seek a favourable resolution.
To extend our restaurant example, once you've placed your order you create the expectation within your mind that you will get exactly what you want. If the waiter didn't bring the meal you ordered, you'd naturally send it back and wait till they brought you what you asked for. Why not put this concept into practice in the other areas of your life? You'll be pleasantly surprised by the results!
Success always has a price!
Once you have decided upon what you want, asked for it and established the expectation of receiving it, the only thing left for you to do is pay the price. Despite what many self-help gurus might have you believe, success will not come to you without sacrifice. Be very aware of what you are prepared to 'pay' in order to get what you want.
After all that, if your life still isn't serving you the banquet that you want and deserve, just keep sending it back to the kitchen until it does!

We all judge ourselves. This is our ego at work.
We can disempower our self judgments by simply recognizing our energy being sucked out of us... as our thoughts permeate our beautiful bodies. Our bodies are a gift designed to communicate with us physically. Our bodies will tell us when we are judgmental of ourselves.
Even when someone else judges us, it's not their words that may harm us but rather it's our ego creating an illusive truth from another's opinion.
To recognize a loss of power, try this: Stand up straight... lean forward... feel yourself FIGHT to move back to your center. Now stand straight... lean backward... feel yourself FIGHT to move back to your center.
This is your power at work... you naturally move to your center. You are bringing yourself home. When you have a disempowering thought, simply notice... "Heh... there is something tugging at me. I'm off balance."
It really doesn't matter what it is that took your power. You don't have to figure it out. You don't have to fix it. You don't have to do anything with it. Simply move back to your natural state... your self... your center. You will know you are home because it feels neutral... there is nothing pulling at you. You are free. To do this choose one of the following:
A loving thought
An accepting thought
A forgiving thought
or you may just observe and laugh at your crazy egoic mind
either way... you will move to your center... to yourself... and you will be free.
If you find yourself with an illness, your body is no longer talking but rather "screaming" about being off balance. Ask yourself... "What am I continuously thinking about myself that is creating this?"
This thought form will be one that plays out in your mind over and over again... to the point where you have actually made yourself sick. Distinguish the repetitive thought, return to your center, and restore your power with one of the conscious alternatives listed above.
Look forward to Healing.

Words lie to us all the time. For example, "I love you" can be empty, meaningless words said without any authentic, loving energy behind them. This is the reason energy awareness is so powerful.
The movement, or lack of movement, of energy helps us discover the truth behind spoken words and other human behaviors. Children and animals are proficient at sensing when words are void and hollow because they are not listening to the words, they are sensing the energy. However, as adults, we are so conditioned and so controlled that we frequently are not in touch with the real thing.
We often fool ourselves. We think that we know, when we do not. We think what we are doing is good for us and it is not. This is our problem, we are thinking. We are stuck in our head, thinking. and pondering and.......going back and forth. The image of Rodin's sculpture, The Thinker comes to mind. The body is stagnant and still. Definitely not dancing like his good friend Isadora Duncan, Mother of Modern Dance.
Sensing is very different from thinking. Sensing is using all of you, the whole you, to know. When you feel, you are accessing data that is much more expanded than just your thoughts about something.
One of the goals of The Vibrant Moment is to teach you how to embrace your unique self without judgments. My desire is to show you how to love, instead of judge, your sexual, physical and emotional self. When you accept these denied and alienated parts of yourself, you become stronger, healthier and happier. Then your body, emotions and energy can give you expanded data and more facts about inner and outer realities.
Those of you who have been reading The Vibrant Moment, know that Judgment and Guilt are the two ugly sisters that control us. They inhibit us and make us doubt our ability to sense and feel. So in order to have more vibrant moments we must reduce our mental judgments.
The solution is to become aware of your own judgmental thoughts and stop them from deleting your energy. And to become aware of the sticky energy of guilt, and never, yes never, make any decision based on that nasty stuff.

"Just a short note of thanks for the CDs. I've only had them for several days now but I already feel they are perhaps the most interesting compilation I have yet seen. Worth far more than the price of admission. The browser linked structure works well and makes it easy to manage such a large storehouse of information. It is rarely that I find something I like as much as this or that I feel strongly enough to write a note like this."
