THE WORLD'S PREMIER PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WEBSITE
Letting Go of my Previous Occupation
Question
I have recently been laid off from my job of almost 30 years. This has been a roller coaster ride for me which most times had not been very pleasant. I realize many people go through this, but when it actually happens to you, it is difficult to understand. I have read quite a few self-help books, affirmations, etc. Sometimes I find it very difficult to focus and am not sure which way to go. I am in the search for jobs mode at the present, have been through a career counselor and have registered with employment agencies. What is the best way to deal with this type of situation? I would like more out of life but sometimes I don't know where to begin. Can you offer some suggestions or guidance?
Wallace's reply
In our present western culture we are encouraged to believe, beginning in school and then in the workplace, that we must always be achieving outwardly - always striving for some distant goal. Remember we are human beings not human doings. It is perfectly natural for you to need a break having worked in the same job for 30 years. You need time to reflect, time to contemplate, time to let go, time to grieve and time to be. This is a healthy sign. Nurture these feelings. Appreciate them. Feel and express any emotions that are surfacing through art, poetry or in an enlightening conversation with a friend.
Life has natural cycles of action and reflection - movement and rest. Remember that during periods of rest and reflection you are achieving inwardly, you are deepening the connection to your heart and soul. This is the most valuable connection you can have. Allow it to blossom. I suggest instead of forcing yourself back to a goal oriented existence take time for BEING. Trust the unfamiliarity of this open ended, directionless feeling. Learn to love it. If you need to work for money get a part time job doing something simple – like working at gardening. In time you will emerge from this open ended experience with a new found purpose and direction which is much closer to your heart’s desire. If you need further guidance and email support you will find it in my book Unfold Your Wings and Watch Life Take Off.
