heart to heart

I've been studying for ages and can't find my life's purpose - help me.

Question
After reading your article on Sai Baba I decided to contact you. I'm at a point in my life right now where I feel very despondent, lost and confused over the purpose of my life. I've being studying for six years now and still haven't a clue as to what I am to do. I guess it's just that I want to fulfill my purpose because I know in doing so I will be happy.

In my heart I know you don't have an exact answer for me (and I'm not sure why I'm emailing this to you - but I just felt a strong need to do so), but I was hoping that even a small word of motivation may share some light on the dark corner of my life.

Wallace's reply
Wallace It is important for each of us to realize that the primary purpose of life is an inner one, that peace and happiness are found inside. To that end we need to understand that the secret of happiness lies not so much in doing what we like, but rather in liking whatever it is we are given to do. My advice to you is to end studying when you are finished your course and end hoping that some magical life purpose is going to set you free. Instead plunge headlong onto the stage of life and play whatever part is given to you. We learn much more from being involved in life than from studying it.

So pick something - anything - and make a start, while at the same time developing your inner world so that while immersed in the rigors of life you are always able to maintain equipoise and balance, for it is the nurturing of such grace that the true purpose of life is found.
