How to Use Inner Guidance to Make Decisions
Introduction
When making decisions we may feel we need to hurry up and make the
decision quickly. Sometimes we feel rushed because we are facing
a deadline, but it is more usual to feel like this because we fear
the openness of uncertainty. We feel that if we make a decision
then at least we have something to hang on to - some certainty.
One of the best ways to encourage inner guidance to speak to us
is to become used to living with the openness of several possibilities
at once, until we become clear which is the best option. Failure
to do this can lead us into trouble.
For Example
Jessica was attending a dress design course at art college. It was
Jessica's dream to have her own dress design studio, and design
for fashionable high street outlets. On her first year at college
she enjoyed experimenting with fabric design and learning about
the cut and style of dressmaking. Then came her big final term project
- designing and making an exotic evening gown. Jessica really wanted
to produce something outstanding. She took out her sketch pad and
after much thought and a few initial sketches drew her initial design
idea. She did not like it and neither did her tutor. However she
was unable to let this idea go. She was afraid that if she dropped
this design she would be unable to think of another one. Jessica
wasted many precious weeks trying to fashion her unsatisfactory
design concept so that it would look better, instead of starting
afresh and producing a number of different design ideas. In the
end she ran out of time and decided to make the dress she had always
disliked. When her project was handed in for assessment and marked
she was given a fail.
An Exercise in How to Use Inner Guidance to Make Decisions
Pick a decision you need to make. Allow yourself to dream about
different solutions. Stay with all these solutions. Explore them.
Do not be tempted to plunge for one in particular. Take quiet moments
for contemplation, allowing each possibility to develop by seeing
it from many different perspectives. Allow each possible solution
to speak to you. As your understanding of each possibility develops,
begin to search for variations or developments in each different
solution that will feel more satisfying. Commit these thoughts to
paper. In time one of these possibilities may develop to become
the most appealing. Live with this answer for a while and see if
it remains the best solution, or combines with elements of the two
other solutions to form an entirely new fourth solution. A moment
will come when something clicks and you just know it is the right
answer. This is the wise time to run with this decision.
