Inner Guidance Training
How to Use Inner Guidance to Learn to Relax
Introduction
Many of us feel that we have to do things. This is because we are
goal orientated. It is good to have goals. However we become driven
and stressed once we believe that we will only be happy and contented
when we have achieved our goal. Contentment and happiness is never
in the future - it is always here and now. To be able to relax,
we need to live a guided life from moment to moment, by always doing
exactly what we are drawn to do. We need to use goals to give our
life direction and our inner guidance to allow those goals to be
achieves in the simplest and least stressful way possible. Failure
to tune in to our inner guidance always causes us difficulties and
stress.
For Example
Stephen had always admired his brother William, who was married
and worked as a university lecturer. In his spare time, during his
long summer holidays, William had used his steady secure job to
finance a series of property investments and was now very secure
financially. Stephen always admired his brother's financial security
and was fearful of his own financial future because he was in a
poorly paid job with no pension. He decided he had to do something
now to make his future more financially secure. He decided to emulate
his brother's business transactions and without talking his ideas
through in depth with his closest friends, he decided to buy two
properties as investments. He had to really struggle to find a company
who would give him mortgages for these two properties. He only obtained
the mortgages by exaggerating his potential earning capability and
telling a few lies, actions that played on his conscience and made
it difficult for him to sleep at night. One of the properties that
he bought was in poor repair and, as he could not afford anyone
to help him, had to work to 3 am some nights to get it ready for
renting. He found this difficult and tiring as he had no natural
aptitude for home repair work. When it came to renting the houses,
he had great trouble finding tenants. Eventually the work was complete
and he had two investment properties with two sets of tenants, but
was totally exhausted and found he had no feeling of satisfaction
at having completed his project. A month later he lost his poorly
paid job and found he could no longer finance his investments.
An Exercise in Using Inner Guidance to Learn to Relax
Next time you feel you have to do something now, or that
you should do something now - STOP. Come to the still
centre within for a moment and ask yourself, is this an emergency?
If it is not an emergency then you do not have to do it. You have
free choice. Instead relax and listen within. Take in all possible
activities that you could do in that moment, including sitting silently,
and ask yourself what you feel like doing? Trust that feeling and
go with it. You may come back to the task you thought you had to
do at a later time. At this later time you may be surprised to find
you feel drawn to do the activity and are in a much more positive
frame of mind about carrying it out.
