Inner Guidance Training
How to Develop Inner Guidance by Becoming Aware
Introduction
The greater our awareness the more we are tuned to inner guidance.
To become aware we need to learn to watch everything. We watch our
external environment, the trees, people, animals, houses - everything.
But watching our external environment is only part of our task -
we also need to watch our internal environment, our thoughts, emotions,
moods, body - everything. We need to become a watchman, one who
watches. Inner guidance comes from this place of pure awareness.
When we are alert and aware we know what is happening around us
and we can watch out for those subtle inner promptings that lead
to wise actions. If we are not aware, then we can run into problems.
For Example
Katherine was interested in buying a second-hand car. After looking
through the paper she saw a Toyota that looked interesting. She
invited her brother Jimmy to come and look at the car with her.
They arrived to look at the car the following evening. When Katherine
saw the colour - a metallic burgundy - she was thrilled. She had
always wanted a car that colour. When she looked inside the car
was like new. Jimmy talked to the owner, a smooth man who spoke
in an affected way. Jimmy started the car and listened to the engine,
which sounded rough. He noticed another two cars around the side
of the house that appeared to be cleaned up for sale. He talked
to Katherine and expressed his misgivings. Katherine half listened
to Jimmy and had a few doubting thoughts. She soon returned to admire
the polished Burgundy bodywork and the clean interior. Katherine
decided to buy the car and paid in cash. A few weeks later the engine
malfunctioned as she drove the car to work. The previous owner refused
to refund her money and she had to pay nearly $1,000 to have it
repaired.
An Exercise in Becoming Aware
Next time you are out for a walk alone in nature, practise expanding
the circle of your awareness. Take in the trees, the flowers and
the sky, take in the sounds around you, take in the smells and the
feel of the wind on your face. Maintaining this awareness move inside.
Notice your thoughts, emotions, moods, and impressions you are receiving
from your body. Notice as much as you can together. Walk where you
feel guided to walk, without any predetermined plan. Then practice
bringing this level of awareness and guided direction into other
parts of your daily life.
