Introduction to the site by Peter Shepherd:
Who is this Peter Shepherd guy then?
So you know who I am, just a few words about the webmaster of the trans4mind site. I was born in '52 in London and now live in France. Fifteen years ago I decided to combine my training and experience as a psychotherapist with what I had learned on my personal spiritual path and in studying transpersonal psychology. So my work moved away from psychotherapy towards the more exciting (to me) field of personal development. In conjunction with my mentor and colleague at the time, Gregory Mitchell, I developed an eclectic approach I call 'transformational psychology' that could be learned by students working alone at home. This resulted in the Start a New Life! course and The Insight Project. The book 'Transforming the Mind' was completed as a personal project (not a formal academic work) to synthesize the many sources of valuable information I had learned into a useable whole, which serves as background material to the courses. Eight years ago I began working full-time on this with the trans4mind web site as the main vehicle.
Recently I have decided, in consultation with Gregory Mitchell, to present the full series of Mind Development Courses in home-study format. These are techniques that were formerly available either one-to-one or in group courses, so significant reworking has been necessary, and I've taken advantage of this opportunity to bring the courses up to date and introduce new ideas that are the result of recent research.
The result of this is that another excellent route onto The Insight Project is now becoming available. The first courses have been launched and the project will grow into a series of 12 Mind Development Courses, applying state-of-the-art techniques to awaken all your mental capacities: IQ, memory, communication, reasoning, creativity and intuitive powers.
There's more about myself, and I briefly offer my opinions about a range of issues that I'm often asked about, on the Peter Shepherd biography page.
What is personal development?
Where do I start?
To the newcomer, this site may seem a bit overwhelming at first—there are so many possibilities! You may be asking, "How can I find that one product or service that is most relevant to me?" One way is to focus on those questions you have about your life, which concern you the most. You can access over 30 key life challenges in four main categories from the blue drop-down menus at the top of most pages on the site. See which life challenge is most appropriate to you. Each "life challenge" leads to a page containing all our free and professional (paid for and supported) tools and services.
Start with the free Heart to Heart services first. For the selected life challenge, read the questions that were sent to Wallace and his replies. See what you feel is relevant to you and what advice you could apply to your own life. Then read the Quick Coach articles selected for that life challenge and see what you can learn from them.
Note that we are a personal development and coaching site, not a replacement for professional psychotherapy or psychiatric medical care, so all the tools we offer assume an ability and motivation to help yourself with your issues.
Having said that, in general the 30-lesson home-study course called 'The Positive Approach' is an excellent place to start working in a positive way to profoundly help yourself, and I would work through at least the beginning parts of that as thoroughly as you can before paying for any further courses or services. In that way you can prove to yourself that you can make progress with self-directed personal development, and then you can go from success to success with the further appropriate free and paid tools that we suggest. It's available freely. I think it's a great way to get going and to judge whether you like the Trans4mind approach to personal development. If you do, then you'll like the main courses too.
So first thing, subscribe to the free weekly Cultivate Life! ezine, which always has very instructive articles. Along with the ezine you then have access to the Seeds of Self-Knowledge eLibrary. This contains over 200 high quality personal development eBooks to download and read, including the Trans4mind publications. I recommend you then download the Positive Approach course in PDF format from the library, and work through this introductory course in your spare time. There are many benefits to be gained from these first steps... for many people, their life has been transformed for the better!
If you've been viewing the site for a while now, I guess you've read at least some of 'Transforming the Mind'. That's the area that the Start a New Life! home-study course takes off from. It's a personal development course based on the principles of rational-emotive psychology, with elements of NLP as well. It helps to get a person thinking clearly and to obtain emotionally stability, which one needs before going on to The Insight Project. The Insight Project is an in-depth, advanced course that moves into the area of transpersonal psychology and spiritual development, and includes the use of a GSR Meter, which is essential. The Insight Project requires regular self-administered sessions for at least a year.
In the Mind Development Courses, the emphasis is less on subjective, emotional issues and more on the development of practical mental abilities such as IQ, memory, communication, reasoning, creativity and intuition.
Note that these courses are personal and spiritual development, they are not a substitute for one-to-one psychotherapy or medical treatment, when these are needed. Though there is certainly a therapeutic element, because they are home-study these courses are for normally happy, healthy and stable individuals looking to enhance their quality of life further.
Another really good thing to do, which complements my courses well, is the Holosync Solution program on CDs, which Centerpointe provides. That can be done alongside my courses - it requires an investment of 55 mins per day listening to the audio, but it's passive (you can relax and meditate at the same time) and tends to have the effect of needing less sleep as a time-saving bonus.
If you don't want to do a paid-for course, then there's a lot to be gained from the site in other ways, such as the practical exercises in Transforming the Mind, and the Emotional Intelligence site has a lot of good information you can work through.
"Daring to be Yourself." What's that?
Of course, every writer wants to be published in print and I'm happy that finally I have that opportunity. Inkstone Press, in Australia, asked me if they could publish Transforming the Mind, but I really wanted to do something new, and they kindly supported me in that. So I've put together a new book, 'Daring to be Yourself,' that was published on November 1st 2007. Again, it's a summary of all that I've learned to date, a sort of convenient 'best of' the trans4mind site, and includes the Positive Approach and other short courses on the site, like Communication & Relationships, and Emotional Intelligence.
It's more personal though, talking a bit about my own life experiences, and it expands on the spiritual dimension, how we can get in touch with our inner knowing, our core essence. To find that inner knowing we need to look objectively, honestly and with an open mind, both at the world and even more so, into our own being. To be a witness of our mind, with love and caring of our conscious self. We have then also transcended or gone beyond the conscious mind and found ourselves spiritually. Creating our lives from that viewpoint is an exciting process, because we're no longer alone, we're connected with all creative energy, the universal quality of spirit. There's more online about it here:
Daring to be Yourself
The aim of this book is to help you achieve a 'wide-awake' state of consciousness, with integrated use of left and right brain abilities, forming the bedrock for breakthroughs in personal consciousness and spiritual insight. The practice is based on the premise that we have learned disabilities that set boundaries to our action and knowing. But no one need accept that they must remain as they were shaped by their hereditary body-mind and by the conditioning of their childhood and culture.

This book is like a "best of" the trans4mind site - that you can read snuggled up on the sofa, away from the computer! But much more than that, it's also an incredibly powerful program for personal growth. Remove the barriers to self-knowledge and reveal your full potential with this step-by-step approach.

How successful is the trans4mind site?
The site gets lots of visitors, typically 360,000 unique visitors per month, but the way I know whether it is actually of benefit to people is when they write and tell me. Often that's very encouraging, like this email I received a few days ago about The Positive Approach...
"I find the resources on your website wonderful. It is a great community of thought and products. I have downloaded 'The Positive Approach - Free 30 Lesson Course' which is exactly what I have been needing. This is a new beginning in my life, marked with these new tools, and the magazine too is of great support and encouragement for me at this time. I feel like I have been drowning and a helping hand has reached down and given me something to hold onto to pull me out of the depths of despair I was in."
What's free and what costs money?
There's a huge amount of useful material on the Trans4mind website that is freely accessible, in the spirit of the fantastic resource that is the Internet. Many people say I'm crazy to do this, but in fact it's my greatest pleasure, particularly when I receive emails from all around the world about the benefits people have obtained.
For example, there's our Heart to Heart Coaching service, the Counterpoint article library, the Cultivate Life! magazine, the Positive Approach course, the full Transforming the Mind book, and much, much more. See the page Free Tools for Transformation
The main courses, however, require a financial exchange: Start a New Life! costs US$ 99.00 and comes with a printed copy of Peter Shepherd's book, Daring to Be Yourself. The The Insight Project course costs US$ 795.00 for all 5 Parts. The Mind Development Courses 1-5 are $39.00 each. See the page Professional Tools for Transformation
If something has not been paid for it tends not to be valued as highly; but if you've paid a significant sum to start a course you are likely to get on and do it, because you want your money's worth. Most personal development books are left on the shelf. It also feels better, ethically, to have paid an appropriate price for a valuable product. Most importantly, the main cost of providing the courses is in the time spent by myself (Peter Shepherd) in supporting each student's progress, and that needs to be paid for in order that such services continue in existence. The Trans4mind paid courses contain a great deal of highly researched and workable material, which will take a normally intelligent and stable individual a very long way on the personal development and spiritual path, as well as provide the tools to support those attainments for this life and beyond.
In any case, a load of good quality resources are freely available at trans4mind.com. The following will help you to find your way around it all... free items have blue links and paid for items have red links.
What's the Start a New Life! course?
The Start a New Life! course provides a very sound personal development path. It's suitable for anyone who is reasonably intelligent and emotionally stable - I say this because it is not a substitute for any needed psychotherapy, which of course must be done one-to-one. I've described the ideas that inform the Start a New Life! course and The Insight Project in the online manual, 'Transforming the Mind.' If you find the techniques there helpful, the 'Explorations,' then you'll like Start a New Life!, which expands on those basics in the appropriate way to prepare for The Insight Project, so that will then run smoothly and easily.
Can The Insight Project aid me in my journey?
Yes, for sure, if you feel motivated to work hard at sorting out the real and deep issues that underlie your view of the world. The Insight Project exposes the conflicting intentions one is holding subconsciously that are resistant to your awareness. It clarifies your identity, beliefs and goals and leads to many insights of truth that would not otherwise be obtained, short of years of intensive meditation done well.
What's The Insight Project all about?
The work of Gurdjieff, Assagioli, Leary, Grof, Wilber, Tart and many others (including the notorious but important Hubbard and Crowley), has pointed me in the right direction - i.e. has given me useful results when applying their principles - but a relatively unknown English lady called Irene Mumford (Gregory Mitchell's mother) has been the breakthrough. Before she passed on, she researched and started teaching The Insight Project (it had a different name then) and developed the best tools I have found to overcome the barriers that obscure insight. I have continued developing it and supporting new students.
The work consists of examining many issues and finding out what beliefs, ways of being and considerations that make up one's personality, have been imprinted by the conditioning of upbringing, the culture, traumatic experiences and all the various influences one is subject to. The identification with this material is broken so free choice is regained and also a new sense of the pure identity which underlies these layers of imprints. It's purpose is to transcend or go beyond the programming that has been installed, hence "The Insight Project." The result is increased awareness, responsibility and ability to face all the areas of life with equanimity.
The Insight Project is a substantial course of personal and spiritual development. It has students all around the globe who have found, I am told, a profound workability in the methods that are taught. In the last few years I've begun presenting this work on the Internet, which has enabled me to contact many interested individuals world-wide, who I would otherwise never have met. Quite a few have become students. Frequently asked questions about The Insight Project are answered on the course site.
What's Biofeedback Monitoring?
Another breakthrough was the addition of biofeedback monitoring to my work as a psychotherapist, as a way to help uncover suppressed thoughts, feelings and information. Jung, Korsybski, Matheson, Hubbard and Monroe have each been influential in this application. This greatly boosts the speed and accuracy of individuals' work on The Insight Project. The Clarity biofeedback monitor is my personal favorite meter. It's particularly sensitive at high balance points, which is sometimes useful.
A biofeedback monitor is necessary for The Insight Project. Some have used a pendulum or kinesiology, but it's not nearly so clear-cut that way, and all the materials are aligned to the use of the bio-meter, so I would say it's a definite requirement. Without the use of a meter subjective techniques can only skim the surface.
Using the meter is not hard. All the complex subtleties described in the meter course online may make it seem so but in reality it's not. The complexities derive from the basic principles. If you 'get' them, then the complexities are understandable and useful too.
In essence, you're just looking for surges of emotional arousal, which make the needle move suddenly to the right (a fall in resistance), corresponding to the 'tension response' in the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system - also known as the 'fight/flight response'. This means the emotional charge is accessible to you, it's bubbling near the surface.
The opposite is a rise in resistance, which occurs more slowly, corresponding to the 'relaxation response' in the autonomic (parasympathetic) nervous system. This is either simply a recovery from the previous tension or it is a reaction in itself, of withdrawal from the charge or subject matter, which is therefore not accessible for inspection at this stage.
How it works scientifically is not really significant. It may be due to changes of skin conductance due to sweating, which is surprisingly instant, or it may be due to the body's energy fields changing in potential, or a combination. Or whatever. But as soon as you hold the meter electrodes and see the needle moving, corresponding to your thoughts, then you know it 'just works'.
The way you actually use the meter is as follows. You ask questions about an area of your case, i.e. a subject about which you have issues - e.g. which is worrying, which you're withholding something about, which is stressful, upsetting, makes you feel frustrated, etc. You look for emotionally-charged thoughts that read (cause a fall of the needle) and you follow up those particular channels, rather than intellectual thoughts that get you nowhere therapeutically. So the meter is a guide into the subconscious.
Which is better and more effective: The Insight Project or Holosync? How long is The Insight Project course? How long will it take to see a breakthrough? How long do I have to meditate and practice The Insight Project tools every day?
The Insight Project and Holosync are very different, and really they go together, as they are complementary. The Insight Project is a conscious in-depth active analysis of issues, to find the inner truth that your mind is obscuring; whereas Holosync really works in a passive, Subconscious manner - you just listen to the sounds and relax - but behind the scenes it stimulates the brain to surface such issues, so they become conscious and can be reassessed. The Insight Project is a form of advanced active contemplation, not passive meditation; whereas Holosync is great for facilitating deep meditation - even if you have no idea how to meditate, it just happens naturally.
Funnily enough, though, they have in common that they are both quite expensive (for the whole program); both very effective (which is why they are worth the money); both include good personal support (which is necessary and why they're not cheap); both can give a significant breakthrough early on (it's unpredictable exactly when as every person is different in the issues they have) - but if it's not early on then eventually it will happen for sure; both take a long time (a few years) to do the whole program, as they consist of many levels or Parts that you can progress through; both require considerable commitment (The Insight Project has a significant learning curve to get to know the techniques and Holosync demands persisting at it every day for some time ,even if nothing seems to be happening); both require about an hour of your time every day; and both (and particularly in partnership) achieve results unobtainable any other way.
Having said that, you can start with one or the other and do very well; but together the going is easier. Holosync has the easier entry, it costs less to start (though the whole program is more), and no techniques to learn. If you have a lot of bottled-up emotional stuff it can be hard, because it brings it all up, but that's a good thing and if you follow their advice and use their support, you'll get through with flying colors. Or if you are a different kind of person, it can seem like nothing is happening for quite a while, until you suddenly notice one day that actually life is a lot better for you, you're not the same person, finally more yourself.
If you prefer a more analytical approach, where you direct and know exactly what's going on, applying powerful techniques that utilize biofeedback sensing to uncover suppressed issues and resolve the underlying truth, then The Insight Project is the way to go.
If you want to start in a less intense way, simply learning valuable principles for personal growth and doing exercises that help you to break through existing limits in your life, then the Start a New Life! is a good introduction to the 'transformational psychology' approach of our courses. After the Start a New Life! course it would be easier to jump into The Insight Project.
If you're interested in the mind and its powers, and would like to really develop this aspect of your being to the fullest before possibly moving onto the more spiritual approach of The Insight Project, then the Mind Development Courses are the way to go. Here the emphasis is less on subjective, emotional issues and more on the development of practical mental abilities such as IQ, memory, communication, reasoning, creativity and intuition. The tremendous mental capacity that will result, will be great assets when you come to study and learn to apply The Insight Project techniques.
So it's your choice, based on what feels right for you at this time. I hope the above makes this more clear for you. If you have more questions, please let me know.
What's on the World of Inspiration CDs?
The World of Inspiration 2-CD Set has a ton of great information - not just the Trans4mind publications but a great many really good books, articles, websites and magazines. They are packed CDs - 1000+ MB is a LOT of information! The CDs are organized like a bookstore, with reception, floors, rooms and shelves - so you can find just what you need quickly and easily. The way it works is you open a page on the CD, the recetiob page, from within your web browser, without needing to be online. The links on this page connect to the books and courses, etc in HTML and PDF format, in the various rooms and shelves, which similarly open in your browser for reading or printing.
Note: they are not an .exe program nor audio CDs, simply CD-ROMs with data files that you access through a web browser. All the contents have been arranged so that the links work without you needing to be online - but the pages also contain live links to the originating sites. It covers a huge spectrum of interests that relate to personal growth and spirituality. Many purchasers tell me how impressed they are with the organization and contents.
There are also some books and courses exclusively available on the CDs. After duplication and postage there is just a few dollars profit on each one, which goes towards the materials which I contributed; the other contents are offered freely. Please buy a copy and help support Trans4mind.
How can I turn my interest in personal development into a new career?
I think a career in personal development would, these days, best be achieved by one of three routes:
- Training as a Psychotherapist (for the information and to enable one-to-one sessions legally). Though this is traditionally about therapy, helping with disabling neuroses, the same principles are valuably in helping normally healthy individuals with their personal development. A diploma is enough, and a period under supervision, to get the necessary legal qualifications (plus the necessary insurance). I would suggest Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy, or Humanistic Psychotherapy. For more advanced Transpersonal work, I would suggest you check out the Association of Transpersonal Psychologists and download their Listing of Schools (PDF).
- Training as a Life Coach (to be able to work in companies, helping individuals and groups with personal development issues).
- Training as an EQ Consultant (to be able to administer EQ tests and consultations in companies). Good companies for this information and training are at EQ Performance and Q-Metrics.
You will inevitably develop your personal eclictic approach, including those further principles and techniques that you've found to be most effective (such as from our courses!), but this needs to be based on a sound foundation of training.
I have looked into doing a course in Transpersonal Psychology, would this be a good direction for me?
Yes, that would be good, so then you would be trained to help others, which also helps you, a lot. Transpersonal psychology is a very broad field; it incorporates all and any psychological theories that are effective, but puts them into a context that takes account of the individual's spiritual dimension. Read 'Transforming the Mind' online. It has the basics of transpersonal theory and a lot of good practical things to do, and it's free. The Emotional Intelligence site too. And read Ayal Hurst's 'Clearing the Way' site for good advice for living in a higher state of consciousness. When you feel it is the right time to do my courses, they will complement the above perfectly. Another good thing to do that will complement and enhance what you've achieved so far is Centerpointe Research Institute's Holosync program, which I recommend to my students too.
What are all these other things on the site?
Alongside 'Transforming the Mind' and information about our home-grown courses, the Trans4mind site has continued to grow, as I discovered interesting new areas, was introduced to third-party courses that work well with what I offer, and met new people who had valuable experiences and knowledge to share. Here is a brief rundown of these sections of the site:
- Magical Wizard Programs
This is a series of 8 audio programs delivered on CD (or by download) that utilize the NLP technique of Ericksonian hypnotic influence. Whilst staying normally alert, and listening to the information, at a deeper level the subconscious is being induced to accept the underlying principles of positive, transformative change, which the conscious mind would otherwise reject because of the fears and resistances built in to the person's belief system.
I never thought before that I'd be selling hypnotic techniques, since the Start a New Life! course and The Insight Project work in the direction of uncovering the programming of cultural conditioning - a kind of anti-hypnosis. The difference here is that the principles being induced are based on fundamental truths which the Higher Self recognizes. The Higher Self and the subconscious working together are bigger than the conscious fears and resistances; the mind is simply induced to change and there is no inner conflict resulting.
It's a good way to move forward if you are not interested in doing the work of understanding psychological functions and the corresponding in-depth analysis, in the courses I offer. The courses offer greater enlightenment and go much further, but still, these new Magical Wizard Programs offer transformative change and this is the name of the game! They're fun and easy to use, very good value and you can try one for free.
- Holosync
A couple of years ago I started doing the Centerpointe Program, to see what all the fuss is about. I was surprised to find there's an aspect of deeply-held case (resistances and negative intentions), built into the brain during its development in childhood, which this works to clear, and I've had significant benefits - most people do. It's an ideal complement to The Insight Project techniques (Holosync doesn't really touch the kind of spiritual internal conflicts that The Insight Project clears) and I highly recommend doing it. It's so easy, you have a pleasant meditation and the ongoing benefits come naturally.
- Hypnosis Downloads
Much of the information on Trans4mind and our own courses is about getting free of the limitations of our conditioning, which is a form of 'cultural trance' or hypnosis - we learn to de-hypnotize our minds and reprogram the mind from the viewpoint of the Higher Self. However this is not for everyone and many people simply want quick-to-apply tools to remedy an aspect of their mind set that is resulting in specific problems on a daily basis - for this purpose hypnosis is a valuable allie.
Modern techniques of hypnosis are nothing like the stereotyped dangling watch, with commands like "when I click my fingers you will forget..." That old approach is neither helpful nor effective, since your awareness is just further conditioned and suppressed. However nowadays the best techniques are not at all manipulative and they are extremely effective, helping you to change your mind set through giving you powerful information in a relaxed and open state of mind, so that you can get past the self-erected barriers in your thinking, overcome your fears, and adopt effective new strategies to transform your life.
- Clearing the Way
Ayal's site has become very popular, for the simple reason the answers she gives to people's questions are both extremely insightful and obtained through a kind of psychic tuning-in process. Beat that! She has great testimonials of the validity of her answers too, so it's not just hot air. Even though she knows nothing of my courses and never mentions them, I love her site. Her Clearing techniques are a more feminine approach than my rather more analytical one, and they work very well.
- My Spiritual Experience
Dale Askew is a young guy who has developed in the last couple of years to have a remarkably mature wisdom - perhaps because he has real experience of things most people just ponder about. It hasn't been easy but he's come through great and I think we all have a lot to learn from him. I hope it's a sign of the potential of his and future generations to introduce a new kind of human nature.
- Emotional Intelligence
This is a nicer name than emotional intelligence or EQ, because the heart is where we feel emotions and this center has it's own kind of intelligence. It's about developing emotional maturity through increasing awareness of one's emotions, i.e. to realize that one creates emotions according to one's interpretation. It's key to the recognition that our view of the world is our own creation too. It's also key to personal happiness and enhanced relationships - body/mind/spirit working together as one.
- Know Your Own Mind
Funnily enough this is the most popular section of the site. People are fascinated with themselves and like to know where they're at compared with other people, because nobody's likely to tell them, not in a helpful manner anyhow. I sometimes get feedback telling me I'm a racist, sexist, homophobic, non-PC bigot - from people who obviously don't get the point of the site at all. I think the questionnaire is very helpful when used intelligently, and I certainly don't come out of it with many scores at the 'norm' (thank goodness).
- Freeing the Mind
Ken Ward is a great guy, very funny and clever, but for some reason most people bypass his site, unless they want a free zip program. But he has a wealth of interesting ideas and useful techniques here - if you have a spare afternoon, I recommend you sit down and get familiar with this site.
- Nutrition: Medicine of the Future
This is a bunch of solid information about nutrition. It's an important subject as the quality of our lives depends to a significant extent on our getting this factor right.
- Books for Transformation
This is a collection of the best books I know about - fantastic, many of them.
- En français
I'm married to a lovely French lady, Nicole, and this version of Trans4mind is her responsibility. It has French versions of the basics - New Life Course and The Insight Project - and information about the area that Nicole works in, running holiday schools for children teaching them emotional intelligence, communication skills and - you guessed it - the things they don't normally teach you at school.

What's planned for the future?
I'm working on an introductory video and some illustrative training videos, particularly for using the biofeedback monitor and doing the basic The Insight Project techniques. It's not easy as I'm a beginner at this but I'll struggle on until they're really good, and then I anticipate they'll be a big plus to what we're doing.
The main development work is the Mind Development courses, an ongoing project over several years.
I've taken on quite a few new product affiliations, each of which I have good experience of and highly recommend. You'll find details on the Recommended Products page. The aim is to make Trans4mind a complete resource to meet everyone's needs, not just a site representing my own book and courses.
Check out my personal comments on each of these elements of the site at the Site Map.
Please subscribe to the Cultivate Life! weekly ezine, which will keep you up-to-date on the latest at Trans4mind - and give you access to the Trans4mind publications and over 200 further free ebook downloads from the Seeds of Self-Knowledge eLibrary. "Just a short note of thanks for the CDs. I've only had them for several days now but I already feel they are perhaps the most interesting compilation I have yet seen. Worth far more than the price of admission. The browser linked structure works well and makes it easy to manage such a large storehouse of information. It is rarely that I find something I like as much as this or that I feel strongly enough to write a note like this."
