You’d have to be living under a rock to not know that one of God’s most celestial voices was silenced this week. And boy has there been hoopla over Whitney Houston’s passing. Each time a celebrity dies of celebrity causes, we every-day types shake our heads in stunned disbelief. How can someone who ‘had it all’ take their own life, drug themselves stupid, destroy hotel rooms, make childishly arrogant demands on others?

What happens when all that talent meets all that power? Why does their Godly blessing become a personal curse?

In my life I’ve had a minuscule taste of adulation. Nothing that made the nightly news, but enough that I felt the intoxification of self-importance. Must admit, it tasted sweet. I can see how it could become addictive.

But, all the while, I also felt like a pretender. Like the praise was undeserved and if they really knew me they’d pack up their smiles and applause and find more worthy prey. The disconnect between the external admiration and the internal inability to accept any of it as real was painful.

Of course, not all celebs walk the well-trod path of self-destruction. And if you ask, they’ll tell you, it’s not real – and they know it. The talent may be real and appreciated, but it’s not who they are, it’s what they do. They’ve been able to make that clear distinction and find solid ground to stand on that is not lined with red carpet.

Down here, in less pretentious air (there’s that pretend word again!), we might find a lesson. You are not your talents or failures. You are not your looks or finances. What you do and what you have are the results of choices that you’ve made in life.

Who you are has never been up to you. Sure, how you demonstrate who you believe you are is up to you – and that’s another form of doing. Behavior is not who you are.

Who you are is perfection and love. It always has been and always will be. Deeper than you will ever be able to affect (thank God) is the truth. You are God’s blessing to the world. His hope for bringing what you do into alignment with who you truly are.

To take joy in knowing that your worth is not determined by others lets you feel joy in living. To seek joy that depends upon others’ approval will only bring you pain.

Each day offers you a choice. Be love’s channel into the world, or pretend you are unworthy. The only thing you are unworthy of is the lie of unworthiness. Remember who you are and all that you do will be a blessing, not a curse.

Today marks the final edition of Cultivate Life! Magazine. Greg Willson, the editor in Australia, can no longer afford to contribute 3 days each week and instead he’ll be focusing on the Trans4mind eBooks imprint, which has started well and has just greatly expanded its distribution, including into the iBookstore. Furthermore, the magazine format we have been offering has proven unpopular, with only a few percent of subscribers reading each issue, which is hardly encouraging. So changes are needed, hopefully to something even better…

A fantastic artist I’ve discovered!

I’ve discovered one of the best artists that I’ve encountered in all my (many) years.

Where we live, in the center of France, in the Bourgogne (Burgundy in English terms) we have made many new friends over the past year. Two of the best are Bas and Agnès van Gaalen, Dutch expatriates, who run a cultural center adjoined to their home at a beautiful little country village called Mougny.

Well, Agnès is an artist and over the last year I have bought many of her paintings… they’re irresistible.

I know, like music, art is very much a personal taste – nevertheless I feel this person’s work should be well known. She uses a mixed media of ink line drawing and watercolor washes, montaged with photographs, applied to thick hand-made paper, and many of the images have an Oriental influence. They’re unique. Here’s an example:

Bas has created a new site to show and sell a particular variety of Agnès’ paintings, like the one above – card-sized so they are ideal as gifts for Christmas or birthdays or for no particular reason… a demonstration of love. Each of these are originals, a one-off painting that is not quick to do – they’re not prints nor copies, so they’re a gift to treasure and probably to frame.

The “Brain Evolution System” – or BrainEv, for short – uses something known as “brainwave entrainment” to help influence brainwaves, putting the mind into a deep state of meditation within minutes of listening, removing the need for countless hours of mind-quietening, monk-like practice.

Yes, we’ve heard all of this before, but what sets BrainEv apart from competitors is its “3 Point Dynamic Entrainment” audio process. This means BrainEv uses three different entrainment methods at the same time, stopping the brain getting too accustomed to one particular pattern, and more closely matching how brainwaves really work. It’s supposed to be much more powerful and effective and can be used to achieve several tasks at the same time – for example, to be more relaxed as well as more alert and focused.

Sounds impressive… But does the Brain Evolution System really live up to its claims? I decided to try it myself for two whole months! To begin, I ordered the entire package from the official website.

Now, before even using the program, I was impressed at the integrity of the company. I was immediately given a free 21-day trial of level one, with an option to cancel before I was billed a single cent. So, I tried it out…

The first level can only be described as a true soundscape. With it’s natural, spacious, etheric feel, you could tell a million things were going on in the background, yet I couldn’t help but just relax and let them float by. Now, I’ve listened to a lot of relaxation music, so I’m used to trickling waterfalls and singing bowls, but this audio was genuinely powerful. You could feel it working, influencing your brainwaves, and helping you to relax further.

It’s recommended you listen to each 30-minute level once per day, six days a week, for a whole month. Then you move onto the next level – finishing all six levels within six months.

Well, after my first listening session, I instantly felt more relaxed. But also my head was less “foggy” and I enjoyed a focus and clarity I’d not experienced in quite some time. I continued throughout the first month and saw a truly noticeable difference in my behavior – in other words, the benefits persisted beyond the session itself and into my everyday life. I became more and more relaxed and calm. My brain seemed to operate faster, and I became more quick-witted. My confidence continued to improve, without any real effort.

Becky Reed has written a short book – “Life in the Aftermath of a Narcissist” – that she has kindly contributed to Trans4mind’s free to download selection of featured ebooks.

In Greek myth, Narcissus was a beautiful young man who rejected all potential lovers, but then tragically fell in love with his own reflection in a pool. Freud expanded the term “narcissism” to explain the difference between being pathologically self-absorbed and having an ordinary interest in oneself.

The book is about Becky’s experience of being married to a narcissistic partner, how that destroyed her happiness, and how she managed to reclaim her independence and move forward again in her life. Her situation was not so unusual as many people are narcissistic, to a greater or lesser extent. Narcissists typically display the following traits:

  • An obvious self-focus in interpersonal communications
  • Problems in sustaining satisfying relationships
  • Hypersensitivity to any insults or imagined insults
  • Flattery towards people who admire and affirm them
  • Detesting those who do not admire them
  • Using other people without considering the cost of doing so
  • Bragging and exaggerating their achievements
  • Claiming to be an “expert” at many things
  • Inability to view the world from the perspective of other people
  • Denial of remorse and gratitude

Shame is the feeling that lurks beneath all unhealthy narcissism, and narcissists use projection to dump shame onto others. They feel better by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else. They happily exploit others without regard for their feelings or interests. Others either exist to meet their needs or may as well not exist at all.

Love and friendship are unknown to a narcissist, and sex is typically without feeling. Becky suggests that love and sex in a relationship that includes intimacy, are our response to our highest values. “Let the sex be the spices and herbs; let it be tenderizing ingredients. But the ‘meat, vegetables, and potatoes’ of a love relationship should be a deep and lasting friendship that consists of trust, honor, respect, lots of laughter and shared experiences of growth.”

Codependence is the ‘catch 22′ situation when one wants to get from the other what neither of them has. For example, one wanting love, the other wanting subservience. This reliance on the other can be taken advantage of, if one of the partners is only interested in looking after their own needs and wants, and the other is always left begging.

Self love is very different from narcissism (or self-obsession) – one is a strength, the other a weakness, due to perceived lack. But self love is the solution to both codependence and narcissism.
