Shame and abuse in the catholic laundries

Posted on February 7th, 2012 in Daring | No Comments »

Maurice Turmel writes in his How to Cope with Grief and Loss blog about the Magdalene Laundries scandal in Ireland, where girls who became unmarried mothers or otherwise sinned and became ‘fallen’ women, were sent in disgrace to become slave labor and to be taught a Christian lesson by the cruel nuns. Still without any justice for their abuse experiences, these women, and there are still many living victims today, were horrifically treated and had their “hearts” pummeled by this daily dose of shame and abuse at the hands of a sick and demented “religious staff”. These victims need to grieve their losses, as do all victims of religious abuse. It’s a loss for all of us as the behavior of representatives of the Catholic Church have totally betrayed the ethos and the hope that Jesus represented.

The Laundries were portrayed vividly in the 2002 film The Magdalene Sisters. The director Peter Mullan has remarked that the film was initially made because victims of the prisons had received no closure in the form of recognition, compensation or apology. Former Magdalene inmate Mary-Jo McDonagh told Mullan that the reality of the asylums was much worse than depicted in the film.

Their suffering is portrayed with fierce pathos here by the wonderful Irish singer Frances Black…

Mary Raftery writes in the Guardian today that this scandal has still not been put to right. Land has been dug up containing a mass grave, full of ‘penitents,’ the label attached to the thousands of women locked up in Ireland’s Magdalene laundries. As soon as possible I hope justice is done and we can move on.

Now’s the time to turn this around and to no longer tolerate religious bigotry nor cruelty of any kind to exist in our communities, as we move gradually toward a world in which humanity has at last, overall, a higher consciousness.

The Basics of an Alkaline Diet

Posted on February 3rd, 2012 in Daring | No Comments »

By Yuri Ulkaim, author of Eating for Energy

The fact is that most North Americans equate the “long weekend” with cottages and barbecues laden with meats of all kinds and a good amount of drinking. It’s no wonder most people don’t feel that great when they get back to work on Tuesday.

What does meat consumption have to do with “not feeling well”? Well, high meat consumption creates more acidity in your body… And when your body (really your blood) becomes more acidic than what is optimal, things start breaking down and not working as well as they should.

I’m a big proponent of an alkaline diet, which essentially boils down to eating more fruits and veggies, and so too are hundreds (if not, thousands) of studies which show that eating more plant foods is the KEY to greater health.

But still, there are many cavemen (sorry, I mean dietitians and doctors) that still don’t get it. Just yesterday, I was doing some research on this topic of the alkaline diet when I came across an article on the website of “Brigham and Women’s Hospital” (which is a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School). I thought, “Ok, cool. Maybe they’ll have some new info or research on this topic that I don’t know about yet.”

I was pumped. But then I was outright livid! The DIETITIAN writing the article on alkaline diet and cancer concluded with the following question and answer:

“Do dietitians and other health professionals recommend alkaline diets? No. Studies of alkaline diet are limited to animal and test tube trials. While research is currently in progress regarding the correlation between alkaline diets and bone health, there are unfortunately no major human studies in regards to alkaline diets and cancer at this time.”

Come on lady! Are you on drugs? What planet have you been living on? If she or other health professionals (apparently I would be included under that umbrella) don’t recommend an alkaline diet, what would they recommend instead? An acidic diet?

It’s no wonder the meals at any hospital in our country are outright nasty. White bread, chocolate milk, pudding, etc…

As you can tell, this kind of nonsense really gets me going because these “health promoters” are essentially telling patients that eating fruits and vegetables doesn’t really matter and that they WON’T improve your health or lessen your risks of cancer, bone loss, or other problems by doing so.

Thankfully, there are many studies that do show the importance of keeping your body alkaline, especially when it comes to bone loss and osteoporosis.

Backing the Alkaline Diet
Did you know that in 1999, 1,167 scientific articles on bone health and osteoporosis were added to the index Medicus database, representing about half of the peer-reviewed studies published on the subject that year? And that number continues to grow as osteoporosis continues to cost our society in big ways.

The worst part is that all of these osteoporosis and bone loss issues are avoidable, witnessed by the fact that osteoporosis is uncommon in many cultures outside of the western world. For example, no sign of bone loss can be found among the Maya Indians, who eat an alkaline diet. Africans have been classified as “almost immune” to osteoporotic fracture. The Chinese were found to have only one-fifth the U.S. fracture rate, despite eating as much, or nearly as much protein (but predominantly from plant sources). Societies with the lowest osteoporosis rates follow the basic premise of eating a predominantly alkaline diet – that is plant-based foods.

Compare that with what’s happening in the US: only 15% of the total United States population meets the fruit (2-4 servings) and vegetable (3-5 servings) recommended intakes on a daily basis. And even those recommendations are outdated and still too low. And french fries do not count as a veggie!

Among children, only 7% consume two fruit servings and three vegetables per day, with french fries accounting for nearly 25% of vegetables, in diets of the children surveyed.

I think it’s pretty obvious that our dietary and lifestyle choices are the most important factors determining our health. That’s why I keep telling you that you must take 100% responsibility for your health. Anyone telling you otherwise is full of you know what!

Alkaline Raw Food Diet and Weight Loss
A raw food diet and weight loss go hand in hand. Alkaline foods are best eaten raw as they retain the vitamins and minerals that would otherwise be lost by cooking them.

The benefits of eating more raw foods are numerous and once you understand them you’ll probably wonder why you haven’t eaten more raw in the past. You’ll also think twice about eating dead cooked foods ever again.

Raw Foods Give You More Energy
I don’t think I know of a single person who eats at least 80% raw foods who doesn’t enjoy far more energy than the average person. I know that when I transitioned away from eating a diet made up of breads, dairy, and cooked foods, and adopted more of a raw foods diet, my energy went through the roof. And I’m not talking about the quick surge you would get from an espresso but rather long-lasting energy that enables you to do more with less.

Find out more about raw food diet and weight loss

For instance, eating raw will allow you to sleep less and have far more energy than you ever thought possible. When I’m eating at least 80% raw, I can easily function on just 4-5 hours of sleep. I literally bounce out of bed and don’t require any naps throughout the day. Oh yeah, did I mention that I workout every single day as well? Sometimes, even twice!

Energizing Enzymes
There are several reasons why a raw food diet will give you more energy. First, raw foods are rich in food enzymes. Enzymes are required for every single reaction in the body. Unfortunately, our bodies only have a finite number of these enzymes, so when we run out, we run out of life! To add to this, when you heat foods above 118 degrees fahrenheit, you destroy the food enzymes that are naturally present in all raw foods. Therefore, if you eat a predominantly cooked foods diet, you’re not getting enough food enzymes, which means that your body will have to produce and use more of its own to digest and metabolize your foods.

The more energy your body needs to divert towards digestion, the less energy you will have for other activities. You will feel more lethargic and tired as your body is trying to breakdown “dead” foods and figure out what to do with them.

So, the food enzymes inherent in raw foods are a big reason for boosting your body’s energy. They are the spark plugs and are intricately related to the next property that make raw foods so energy-boosting.

Life Force
When raw foods are left intact, they are also known as living foods. They are called “living” because they carry an incredible amount of life force. Now, since every living being has an aura or energy field illuminating from their body, which foods do you think would enhance yours? High energy raw foods or cooked foods that dead? I think we both know the answer. As I like to say, “eat alive and you will thrive”.

Raw Food Diet and Weight Loss and Beautiful Skin
The other highly sought-after quality of a raw foods diet is its ability to help you lose weight and beautify your skin. Almost all raw foodists have reported losing weight they could never lose. At the same time, they notice an instant improvement in their skin. They look younger and have a natural glow that comes about because of the “living” nature of raw foods, their abundance of enzymes, and of course the plethora of nutrients that are ingested when eating more fruits and vegetables.

You will find it easier to lose weight on a raw food diet because your getting more nutrients and, therefore, your body won’t crave “dead” foods. Second, the enzymes help to breakdown the foods you are eating and excess energy and fat stores in your body. Third, raw foods are water-rich, which helps you feel more satiated, as well as hydrated.

Many of these reasons also help us explain why living foods make you look younger and beautify your skin. Enzymes, life force, water, and high quality nutrients all play a role in natural skin care.

We could talk about the benefits of a raw food diet for hours but the only way to truly understand them is to experience them for yourself. So why not take action today and start to enjoy the health, the body, and the vitality that you deserve!

How Music Affects Water and What This Means to Us

Posted on January 17th, 2012 in Daring | 7 Comments »

Can words and music really affect water? Dr. Masaru Emoto, a doctor of alternative medicine from Japan, has conducted many experiments on water crystals and have found that words and music have both positive and negative effects on water. Dr. Emoto‘s experiments have been published in several books, one of them the well known book The Hidden Messages in Water. His findings show that music has a big effect on water and therefore, on us as well, since we are largely made up of water.

Dr. Emoto put water into containers and wrote or typed different thoughts and feelings on labels and put them on the containers. Immediately afterwards, the water was frozen and the combination of a microscope and high-speed photography resulted in photos of water crystals. Beautiful water crystals were formed when Dr. Emoto used beautiful words, such as love and gratitude, while misshapen and distorted crystals were formed when slang or swear words were used. Polluted water formed ugly crystals, but after polluted water was prayed over, prettier water crystals resulted.

Such amazing findings show that words, both written and spoken, can actually have an effect on water. But what about music? Dr. Emoto also did these water crystal experiments with music. He put water between two speakers and turned on a specific piece of music for several hours. Then the water was frozen and photographed by Dr. Emoto.

Classical music such as those by Beethoven and Bach resulted into beautiful water crystals. Dr. Emoto also found that the Tibet Sutra and the Kawachi Folk Dance all produced pretty water crystals. However, rock music did not have the same results – instead, rings of cracks showed up when the water exposed to rock music was frozen.

These results by Dr. Emoto and other scientists since then have shown that some music has healing properties and others don’t. What’s even more amazing is that music actually has an effect on non-living, physical matter. Since 70% of our bodies are made up of water, we can apply the healing properties of classical music to our own bodies.

Every piece of music has different frequencies, and these frequencies can reach different parts of our body to assist our immune systems and minds to achieve healing and other positive effects. Dr. Emoto has said that he sees energy as vibrations moving through matter. These vibrations are called hado by Dr. Emoto. Hado translates as “wave motions” or “vibrations.”

For example, listening to “The Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana can reduce irritability and energize the lymphatic tissues of the body. Dr. Emoto attributes this to the hado in the music that can cancel out the hado of irritability. The music also resonates with the hado of lymphatic system. Other examples include listening to “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss II will revitalize your central nervous system, while listening to the opera “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner will remove the hado of self-pity from your thoughts.

In all, Dr. Emoto and his research and findings on how music affects water has profound implications for us and the role music plays in our lives.

In the book, Gregor wakes up to discover he has turned into a giant insect. This change makes him literally and emotionally separate from his family members – indeed, from humanity in general – and he even refers to it as his “imprisonment.” After his transformation he stays almost exclusively in his room with his door closed and has almost no contact with other people. At most, his sister Grete spends a few minutes in the room with him, and during this time Gregor always hides under the couch and has no interaction with her. But as we learn over the course of the story, this feeling of estrangement actually preceded his transformation. Shortly after waking and discovering that he has become a bug, Gregor reflects on his life as a traveling salesman, noting how superficial and transitory his relationships have become as a result of his constant traveling. Later, Gregor recalls how his initial pride at being able to support his family faded once his parents began to expect that support, and how he felt emotionally distant from them as a result. In fact, the alienation caused by Gregor’s metamorphosis can be viewed as a reflection of the alienation he already felt as a person.

What is Personal Development and Why Bother?

Posted on January 1st, 2012 in Daring, Personal, Site News, trans4mind | 2 Comments »

Part of the nature of humans is to be constantly developing, growing and moving toward a balanced and mature way of being. Our present personality is determined by both who and what we have been and by the person we strive to become. The goal of personal development is to learn and apply that which enables us to attain emotional wellbeing, understanding and effectiveness, and to share this knowledge with others.

Personal development works by…
enhancing and integrating rational, emotive and intuitive faculties – mind, body and spirit working in unison.

Personal development empowers us…
to live a happy and fulfilling life, through exercising free choice, seeing objective truth and realizing the highest degree of purpose.

Using the personal development resources at Trans4mind you can become your own life coach – or learn to help and coach others. What you learn carries over to your career and professional development, and working well in a team. As your responsibility expands, so does your leadership… fully aligned with your inner knowing, values and life purpose, and guided by the principle of loving service.

But why bother now?
Personal development is the conscious evolution of human nature, and yet throughout history it has been sorely lacking! Although it is in our nature to learn and grow, we are held back by our culture, which is predominantly focused on survival needs, each of us in competition with others, and our spiritual inner nature is repressed. The animal rules. We make no room for unconditional love.

Even though the culture may have evolved with technological advancement and administrative complexity, human nature has not moved forward as it might. We are now paying the price for human selfishness and inconsideration. Looking at the outlook in 2012, the quality of our lives on this planet – even our survival – now depends on each of us taking responsibility for our personal growth.

We truly need a more conscious Mankind and that begins at home, with each one of us.

The human being needs to awaken to the soul that inhabits each body and is our true self and source of inner knowing. Awaken through a process of self-discovery, leading to one’s own, self-directed spirituality. We need to become mindfully conscious instead of ruled by the dictates of instincts, past habits and fixed beliefs. We need to throw away dogma, open our minds and reconsider. Instead of fear about our survival and competitive angst, we will then be motivated by compassionate understanding and creative love.

It is said, whatever you are willing to put up with is exactly what you will have. Well enough of that, it is time to overturn the tables in the temple, to insist on reform wherever we find injustice, greed or waste. And first and foremost to reform our own way of living – to raise the flags of our dearest held values up high. For those that do move forward, the next epoch – that is almost upon us as we move into 2012 – will be a celebration of human cooperation and shared love. It’s our best hope for the future – and it’s in our hands. We have the tools.

We Have It Backwards!

Posted on November 25th, 2011 in Daring | 4 Comments »

Nanci L. Danison is the author of a series of three “Backwards” books… “backwards,” because that’s how many academic authorities have understood the actual truths of life: completely back to front!! These three books present what I consider to be the most profound and clearest statements of the essence of things I’ve ever encountered, derived directly from Nanci’s astonishing near-death experiences and the Universal Knowledge she was given when close to Source. All that, without ever becoming dogmatic nor burdening us with a new belief system. What I like best is that she is one of the few that realizes what is true from a human perspective is different from what is true from a spiritual perspective; indeed, truth is multi-layered. If you are at all interested in what we are doing here, living the human life, and why – and how to also live the spiritual life – then these books are essential reading…

  1. Backwards: Returning to Our Source for Answers – shatters the age-old belief that we are mere humans, that fate determines our destinies, and that a task master God demands our obedience and worship. Nanci L. Danison, JD, brings the credibility of a trial lawyer trained to evaluate evidence to her account of the answers to our most pressing spiritual questions: who is God? Who am I? What is the purpose of life? Why am I here? What happens when we die? And how should I live my life here on Earth? She offers a “life plan” from the afterlife that originates in and resonates with our true spiritual nature, and provides step-by-step guidance on how to access and develop our Source-like traits in order to bring peace and happiness to our own lives and our planet.
  2. Backwards Guidebook – takes us deeper into Ms. Danison’s personal encounter with the Source of all of creation, and provides more detailed explanations of the new spiritual truths brought forward in her first book. The Guidebook incorporates exercises designed to explore the reader’s current spiritual beliefs and help guide them to a higher level of perspective–that of the Source itself.
  3. Backwards Beliefs: Revealing Eternal Truths Hidden in Religions – witness, through the author’s eyes, the creation of the universe, early man’s need for gods and religions, the roles religious messengers have played throughout history, the origin of the Christian churches, Earth’s future, and more. Backwards Beliefs provides an incredible peek into Mankind’s history as it actually happened, a gift granted to the author during an afterlife experience in response to her concern that what she learned by dying contradicted her Christian education. This first-of-its-kind book reconciles some divergent spiritual vs. religious viewpoints with simple, clear, and easy-to-understand explanations of how eternal truths became hidden in human belief systems.

NANCI L. DANISON – VIDEO SERIES
Afterlife experiencer Nanci L. Danison is interviewed by Ted Henry (ABC News) about her death, afterlife experience and memories of what she learned in the afterlife about life, death and God. The entire interview is available on DVD on her website, Backwards Books. This is Part 1…

Continues… Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6

A second, equally fascinating interview in which afterlife experiencer Nanci Danison describes her near-death experience in which she died right after a needle localization procedure from an allergic reaction, left her body, entered into a black void, and went into the Light. This clip is taken from her DVD entitled “What Happens After We Die?”

Continues… Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

Freedom to Change

Posted on May 26th, 2010 in Daring | 8 Comments »

Current events have demonstrated a tremendous desire, on the behalf of perhaps the majority of people in the world, for peace in their lives. They are no longer satisfied with the mentality of political conflict, which endangers economic progress and human rights and freedoms. But most importantly, I feel that many people are now aware that if we want peace in the world, first we need to make peace with our own lives. It is human nature that needs to change, and we are capable of making such a transformation.

Our experience in the world reflects our inner state – yes, this is a kind of magic but that is the reality, the world is miraculous. I have seen so much evidence of this when I – or a student or client – have made a genuine shift in our belief system that resolves an inner conflict, then very soon our real-world circumstances change accordingly. We mirror our internal state – our resistance/fear and acceptance/love – in our personal life experience. As a group we mirror our consciousness in world events. It is our personal responsibility to become aware of our contribution to the group consciousness, to help create a world with more opportunities for ourselves and our loved ones – which ultimately means for everyone.

So what wars do we wage inside? The purposes and goals that we hold dearly – some we may have brought into this life or felt most strongly as a child or young person – are often compromised in the face of problems that we discover in trying to achieve them, and we may forget about them (actually suppress them) and opt for safer solutions. Playing the safe game is a sad conflict with the game we really (still) want to play. We have become someone else, a substitute for our true self. Reinforcing this position are the attachments we have come to cling on to, the fears we may have of losing control of our safe space, the resistance we feel against elements of change, and the judgments we make that prevent acceptance of what is.

To better our position, to be able to open up our space and express our true desires, we first need to come to terms with our situation. Our true nature is an expression of love and that is the quality that we need first to rediscover in our consciousness.

Before we can contribute, through our consciousness, toward peace in the world we need to make peace with ourselves. Before we can love others unconditionally we need to be able to genuinely love ourselves. Before we can forgive and cease making judgments of others we need to learn how to forgive ourselves and warmly accept ourselves just as we are.

If we can forgive ourselves then we can more easily forgive others. If we do not feel able to forgive others then we clearly have not learned to love ourselves. And the irony is, when we do truly love ourselves, we and others will not even need any forgiveness, because we are able to accept the past, present and future as it is, without judgment. Our creation. Discrimination – of good/bad, right/wrong, ugly/beautiful – is not part of the vocabulary of love.

Are we all born equal?
The short answer: yes, but not the same, not by a long chalk.

All persons have the same qualitative make-up; we are born equal in this respect, as recognized in the values of ‘Equality, Fraternity & Brotherhood.’ All human beings have the same reflexes, instincts, drives, needs, capacities, and rights; all have the same powers of perception, discrimination, attentiveness, retentiveness, reasoning, and so forth.

The differences between persons are quantitative rather than qualitative. ‘Equality’ is to do with our qualities, that we all share, but not the degree to which they are developed.

Behavioral psychology has installed the idea that we inherit all of our traits, and besides the modifying effects of cultural conditioning that we stay basically the same as our genetic hard-wiring dictates. That’s true if you don’t do anything about making positive change, if you don’t recognize the aspects of yourself that are more than animal. Recently many have recognized this possibility and they are looking for valid information that can help them make positive changes.

We each differ in the degree of our various spiritual, mental, emotional and physical abilities, and in the manner in which the amounts of the various traits combine in our individuality. A wide range of aptitude, personality, learning and intelligence tests will show differences as high as 25:1 from person to person, with a characteristic bell-shaped distribution curve, in much the same way as physical characteristics are varied.

It is these quantities, which are such an important factor in personal competence, creativity and ultimately our success in life, that personal development aims to increase. It is through our differences that we are able to express our individuality and achieve unique goals.

Fortunately it is possible to develop our skills, talents, maturity and intelligence to high degrees, using appropriate techniques. For example, there are effective mind development courses available to develop the faculties of vision, communication, concentration and will, learning and reading skills, logic, memory, intuition and creativity.

I feel that it is a mistake to belittle the differences between individuals due to a fear of being seen as judgmental or non-accepting of a person who has little of certain qualities. It is much better to be realistic (which is truly to be non-judgmental and accepting) and recognize the strength and weakness of our various qualities. Then we can take advantage of the opportunities that are available to develop and improve ourselves, toward the goal of fulfilling our potential.

Freedom to change
Implicit in any concept of learning is the notion of change. If we open our minds to discovering and learning new information, we change some part of ourselves: our attitude, behavior, values, assumptions, or perhaps the amount of knowledge we have. The change may mean a rejection or an alteration of previously accepted beliefs or behavior, or it may mean an expansion or extension of them.

Change is often perceived as frightening as it threatens to rob us of the safety and legitimacy of our personal, often cherished, position and boundaries – especially since maintaining this safe space has helped us to survive as well as we have up to now (even if that’s not as well as we could do).

When change is demanded by another person or new circumstances, we tend to feel threatened, defensive and perhaps rushed. The new learning is not perceived as something desirable and of our own choosing. Pressure to change, without an opportunity for exploration and choice, seldom results in experiences of joy and excitement in learning.

To turn this around, we need to be proactive in our learning, to expand our knowledge and abilities in advance of forced changes of circumstance. If there’s one thing guaranteed in our lives it is that change will be upon us, sooner or later; usually sooner. If we are open to change, and are willing to learn whatever is necessary to predict and adapt to it, we can even become its master and control its direction. Self-directed learning is therefore key to mastery over life and to the creation of the life that we want.

The above passage is drawn from my ebook Daring to be Yourself. The book is based on principles which have helped thousands of people, endorsed by experts over the centuries. The ebook (available as a downloadable digital file) intersperses theoretical understanding mixed with practical exercises throughout, to help you uncover the barriers to self-knowledge and freedom of expression and action.

Part One, Getting Started, looks at some basic principles of happiness and some tips to start making your life more self-directed and fulfilling.

Part Two, Background Psychology, is a summary of the broad streams of psychological thought that are the context and source of the personal development techniques that follow in the book.

Part Three, Communication & Relationships, comprises a short course to improve communication skills. Communication is the solvent of all problems and is a foundation for personal development.

Part Four, A Positive Approach, is a set of personal development principles and exercises that I have found to be particularly effective over the years, both as a psychotherapist and in teaching many students around the world on our courses. Based on the Positive Approach course you’ll find on this site, the book takes this a step further to provide a powerful path for your forward growth.

Part Five, Achieving Goals, gives the key tools you need for creating the life that you most desire.

Part Six, Background Psychology II, sets the stage for more advanced work on self-development, leading into the transpersonal realm of enhanced spiritual awareness.

Part Seven, Going Beyond, concentrates on the spiritual dimension of personal growth.

Human nature is universal, something we all share. But that doesn’t mean human nature cannot further evolve; indeed it must, to meet the needs of Mankind’s present situation, where a greater degree of peaceful cooperation, reform and justice is critical for our future survival and prosperity.

Most of us just struggle on. We do everything bar change our minds. Only a few realize that the path of personl growth means changing ourselves. Those who have this realization – and act on it – gain what others can only dream about. All you have to lose is whatever stands in your way. Nothing will change unless you do.

No one need accept that they must remain as they were shaped by their hereditary body-mind and by the conditioning of their childhood and culture. Each of us can evolve consciously by undertaking our own path of personal development, according to our individual needs, weaknesses and strengths. To make a really good start, the Daring to Be Yourself ebook covers a range of key personal development topics and most people will benefit from increasing their knowledge and abilities in these areas.

The key is to take what you learn and put it into practice in your daily life. To change the engrained habits of a lifetime, and even to change the nature programmed into your genes, is possible but it will take your determined application, over and over again, to reprogram your mind and transform yourself.

Remember, the guide on your path is your own true inner nature, your connection with the universal, and that is LOVE. Love is unconditional acceptance. At all times ask yourself, “Am I doing / thinking / saying this in love?” and you will not go far wrong.

“Why do we find so many books attempting to guide and aid us in locating the answers to our search for self-knowledge and truth? Could it be the style of communication many authors use may not connect with all of us?

“I believe this to be the case because in reading Peter Shepherd’s marvelously insightful and educationally researched work, I felt as if I were sharing an awareness building conversation with a cherished friend. The compassion within the writing style made me experience that rare moment-out-of-time emotion where information connects with personal observation and first hand dealings. This is the ignition of “creation,” and without judgment, Peter Shepherd offers psychological cornerstones mixed with the validation to choose the path that suits you – not the “you” categorized by others but the you deep inside who has preferences and a magnetic yearning to travel a certain direction.

“The techniques and methods for highlighting our individual wake-up call are simply stated and easy to undertake. What a delight to feel the presence of company along the path that draws us to change. I’m at home on my new course.” –Becky Reed

Re-Wiring the Soul

Posted on August 13th, 2009 in Daring | 3 Comments »

Dr. Gabriella Kortsch produces a wonderful radio show each week called Re-Wiring the Soul… “This is a show that aims at real talk about how to make a difference in your life. How to improve your life. How to better understand why you are the way you are and help yourself grow far beyond that. This means that we focus not only on your psyche, your mind, your emotions, and your body, but also on your spirit and your soul.”

The show’s archive contains many emminent leaders and researchers, healers and practitioners – a lot of fascinating material and Gabriella, who has a great mind herself, draws the best out of them. Last week Gabriella kindly asked me to appear on the show. I enjoyed it tremendously, I hope you will too…

Looking back to previous shows, the guests she interviews are a fascinating bunch. It’s well worth putting the show’s RSS feed into your newsreader or browser bookmarks.

Start a New Life!

Posted on September 1st, 2008 in Daring, Site News, trans4mind | 4 Comments »

My recent article The Wheel of Life discussed the “high end” of personal growth – the transpersonal realm where a developed personality merges into the “higher self” of unbounded consciousness. This is a world of integration. The tools that The Insight Project provides are some of the best available for becoming aware of this spiritual dimension in your life and opening up your life to a whole new degree of potential.

I also emphasized in that article that although we have this spiritual dimension, that we may be aware of to a greater or lesser extent, nevertheless the foundation of our lives is the body-mind experience… we feel and express ourselves in the very solid, physical dimension of our life on Earth. This is a world of separation. Each of us is a unique player in the game of life and as a result of our experience, we learn: both positive learning (helpful skills, insightful knowledge) and negative learning (developing fears and limiting beliefs, for example). A few years on this planet and we can get into a right stew! I know I did. My attempt to sort out my personal life involved psychotherapy and I naturally wanted to pay back the help I received by helping others similarly: I became a psychotherapist.

It became apparent to me, however, that psychotherapy was focused too much on undoing the negative learning; there was an imbalance. We also need to make headway with our positive learning or we remain dependent on further therapy to continually dig us out of the next hole. We need tools for positive learning – indeed, simply having and using such tools makes the psychotherapy work largely unnecessary, except as a rescue stage for those new to personal growth.

It was this realization that first interested me in the personal development field. Following some years of experimentation and discovery, I became well grounded in “positive psychology” and had great results, both for myself and others I coached. This included mind development, taught by my mentor at that time, Gregory Mitchell. I developed further tools to fill gaps I perceived in the brilliant heritage that positive psychologists such as Alfred Adler, Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, Eric Fromm and many others have left us. And I decided to devote my career to this direction – the Trans4mind website was born at this juncture, to share what I had learned… again, my “payback.”

The Character Strengths and Virtues handbook by the Values in Action Institute, represents an attempt on the part of the research community to identify and classify the positive psychological traits of human beings. This manual identifies six universal values that lead to increased happiness when practiced…

  1. Wisdom and Knowledge: creativity, curiosity, open-mindedness, love of learning, perspective
  2. Courage: bravery, persistence, integrity, vitality
  3. Humanity: love, kindness, social intelligence
  4. Justice: citizenship, fairness, leadership
  5. Temperance: forgiveness and mercy, humility, prudence, self control
  6. Transcendence: appreciation of beauty and excellence, gratitude, hope, humor, spirituality

These qualities are innate potentials in each of us and are developed naturally as the result of positive learning. Practical applications of positive psychology therefore help individuals to identify their strengths and further develop these virtues, to build and broaden their lives.

The way out is the way through – it’s not by denial or avoidance, it’s by acceptance and responsibility. The power of love, in other words, replacing fear. This is the way forward. But for most of us, we can use some support and guidance, to get our head above water and start to swim ahead – then we can approach dry land, walk, run and eventually learn to fly. The latter – ascending in the spiritual dimension – seems the trickiest bit, but actually it’s a continuation of the same path: that of ever-increasing mindfulness and integrative love.

The “foundation” course that Trans4mind provides, to help a person overcome their negative learning, to get on “dry land” and start to develop in a positive, empowering way, is the Start a New Life! home study course. The course comes with personal support from myself. It is firmly based in positive psychology and aims to uncover and nurture one’s innate qualities, and to make normal life much more fulfilling. The course aims to give you a real good start on the wonderful path of personal growth.

Start a New Life! is entirely a practical course and it works very well as the “Workbook” to accompany my paperback book, Daring to be Yourself, that was published in 2007. So now I give a copy of this book to new students of the course. The course and book complement each other: they have the same theoretical base and they are both intended to give you the motivation and courage to get “out of the rut” and start what is, in effect, a new life – a new you… the real you this time!

New Year Message

Posted on December 17th, 2007 in Daring, trans4mind | 5 Comments »

There is a large group of enthusiastic students of the trans4mind materials that meet each week in Libya, to discuss and learn. I started my New Year Message to these students with the following message:

“I am so happy that you all, a sincere group of seekers after truth, have made so much progress the past year, even in the face of obstacles that your society has presented to your free thought and activities. It’s not just in Libya; this is typical of all human societies, where vested interests suppress new visions.”

I then continued with a passage extracted from my book, ‘Daring to Be Yourself.’ You can read the message here…
